A previous reviewer stated many of my own sentiments very well. Familiar with the sadly under-appreciated quartets by Bedřich Smetana from other recordings, I always found the compositions truly extraordinary but the performances anywhere from a bit thin to outright pallid. This is not lightweight material at all, so thin-to-pallid simply doesn't work. In contrast, this recording by the Talich Quartet does it all. Their technical proficiency is nothing short of superb, but the deep, richly resonant tones of their instruments and their perceptive control of wide dynamic range makes all the difference. Add in outstanding recording technology that adds a phenomenal degree of presence, and the recording crystallizes to perfection. For me, Smetana's quartets are no longer gems in the rough; this finely polished recording has made them the brilliant, clear, and deep gems the composer meant them to be. Unfortunately, I'm still no nearer to pronouncing the composer's first name correctly.

Continuing with the Czechs, Suk's Meditation is also beautifully done, and the Vanbrugh Quartet's performance of Janáček's String Quartet No. 1 is a pleasant complement to the Smetana pieces.

All in all, it's one of the finest recordings I've ever purchased. If you are the slightest bit interested in these compositions, you won't be disappointed with this album.

This pair of quartets became widely know to collectors in the early 1960's through the fine performances recorded by the Smetana Quartet on Supraphon. Since then there has been a second such recording by the Smetana Quartet but, with the passing of time, with different players. That newer recording maintains the same empathy but with much improved sound.

The Talich Quartet recorded on the current disc shares the same performing history of the Smetana Quartet, having also recorded the quartets previously and it shares the same cultural empathy coming as it does from the same part of the world. The two quartet groups share the same general musical background therefore and their music making of the Slavonic repertoire is second to none other than to each other. They are both technically of a very high standard and are able to play with sensitivity throughout.

However there is a difference between the two groups with the Smetana Quartet favouring a brighter sound world than the Talich Quartet who favour a darker, richer tonal pallet. This inevitably makes quite an impact upon the interpretation. In this case, bearing in mind Smetana's own 'From my Life' subtitling and his reference to his tinnitus problems that finally ended in deafness, it is arguable that this new Talich version of the music with its darker character, may be particularly appropriate.

The piece by Suk is well-made but will not be the deciding factor for purchasers. I would suggest that this disc would make a good 'only' version or a fascinating alternative and darker version for those who already own one of the Smetana Quartet recordings. The actual recording quality is of the usual high standard expected of this company (originally Collins recorded in 1991).

Sorry, I am not able to write my review in English.
