Good Pop Melodies and Production,

This review is from: Smile Kid (Audio CD)
This is a decent album from We The Kings, although it won't score any points for originality. The album's best two songs sound like other songs by other artists, particularly the opening riff from the single "Heaven Can Wait" is strikingly similar to the Bodeans' "Closer to Free." The track "The Best Time of Your Life" sounds like a fast, happy version of Linkin Park's "Shadow of the Day."Despite these limitations, the album plays through quickly and keeps you humming along. It is a lighthearted effort similar to All Time Low's new album, 100% pure confectionary sugar pop. Another similar album is Boys Like Girls "Love Drunk." This is a pop record with a few country-pop inflections. Not a single track on here is anything remotely emo or rock or pop-punk. So, if powerpop is your thing, you might like this. It does not have as many hooks or as tight performances as a more mature pop band like Cheap Trick or Tinted Windows, but it is not half bad. It's like a big-budget Hollywood remake of a classic film. If you don't mind the fact that this has all been done before, you just might enjoy it immensely.

I really hate to do this to a young band I really like, but the band needs to strive to recapture the texture and writing of their first album. This album -- while sporting a noticeably higher production value -- pushes more into the pop arena ... closer to All American Rejects than their first album, which had a unique sound. The melodies are catchy, but I don't think they'll have staying power. What's with the whistle on "Summer Love"?

Good follow-up to self-titled CD,

Everything is catchy.. guitar overlays, vocals, drums. Exceptional album. Song structure, melodies, and lyrics are all phenomenal. This album sounds a little like The Summer Project's new EP (if you don't know them, look it up). This album is a 5/5. I can't wait for their next work!
