4.0 out of 5 stars Smiley Smile, July 30, 2005
This review is from: Smile Method - How to Avoid Gum Surgery and Dentures (Paperback)
Gardiakos is somewhat obsessed with taking care of his teeth through the smile method that he has developed down to the last pre-caution and detail. And who blames him? When you are sitting in the dentist chair, hearing the bad news about your teeth and gums and how much it's going to cost you, you wish you had taken better care of your teeth. Gardiakos got himself in a similar situation by going through his twenties not going to the dentist, figuring that brushing once a day would be adequate. That reminds me of someone I know most intimately of all. But as time went on he developed severe gum and tooth problems that brought him to the edge of surgery. He decided to find out if he could avoid it by reading up on alternative ways to take care of his teeth. Many of his ideas are conventional--flossing, irrigating with a water pik, and brushing with electric and standard toothbrushes. He also recommends mega dosing with vitamin C for gum health. His most unconventional idea is to use a vitapik to shoot hydrogen peroxide heavily diluted with salt water into the deep gum pockets that have formed from periodontitis. If that doesn't work with an infection, he uses antibiotics. He seems to be have been successful in keeping his teeth and gums in stable health this way and able to avoid surgery. He recommends you get an open-minded, democratic dentist who will help you to follow his plan and answer all your "annoying" questions about the condition of your teeth and gums. He has some questions that you must ask your dentist.

I found that brushing with heavily diluted hydrogen peroxide is a great way to clean your teeth and find it much easier to floss after doing so. I've noticed that I can smell a little peroxide on my breath from time to time, but he doesn't recommend that you brush with it everyday. I do not plan to follow his plan to the T since my problems aren't as severe, but I'm always looking for some good dental tips. His book reads like an instruction manual in outline style. It was little boring to read, so I read it bit by bit, but it's not a long book. He also has a handy summary of the method on one page and quick list of what to eat and not eat for the benefit of your overall health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, save your teeth!, October 9, 2007
This review is from: Smile Method - How to Avoid Gum Surgery and Dentures (Paperback)
This book is fantastic! I guess if you're not motivated it can be a bit dry, but if your gums are hurting and the standard dental suggestions aren't working for you, it's a real page-turner. I like it because it's precise and well-organized. There's a lot of information in it, gleaned from a wide array of sources. But better than that, there's a lot of "Do it this way" kind of advice. He gives suggestions on good products - toothbrushes, both manual and electric, irrigators, etc. I have a good memory for what I read, but this book is so content-filled I couldn't remember it all at the first reading. That's OK, because it's organized so well that it's easy to look up any topic for review. Thank-you, Vasilios Gardiakos, for letting me and your other readers benefit from your determination to solve your own mouth problems!

This is an excellent book with valid and ideal advice on how to address gum disease. Many women begin to loose bone in and around the back molars when they hit their 40s. This book gives you options that your dentists will not share with you--fact. If they did they'ed loose a great deal of money---thousands! Replacing one tooth w/bone grafting costs ~$2,700 but if you want anesthesia it'll cost you an additional grand--includes titanium implant. While you're waiting for the bone graft to heal you'll need a flipper which will run you another ~$1,200. Now comes the real news...the tooth that goes on the molar implant will cost you another ~$3,200 for a grand total of around ~$8,000 for one tooth when all is said and done. And don't forget they're not insured so if you break the new tooth you'll have to purchase another one at the same price. So use the Smile book, hang on to your own teeth--they were free, choose prevention, become obsessed about flossing after every meal, invest in Listerine stock, and avoid costly dental surgery.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SMILE METHOD, September 11, 2010

This review is from: Smile Method - How to Avoid Gum Surgery and Dentures (Paperback)
The process of attaining and sustaining general good health depends on the establishment and maintenance of a healthy oral environment. More and more, the periodontium (i.e., the gums and tissues supporting the teeth) is becoming recognized as a periodontal "window" into the body. As diseased gums pump high levels of harmful bacteria into the bloodstream, studies suggest that oral health (e.g., gum disease) is related to serious conditions like heart disease.

In 2004, the American Academy of Periodontology published protocols similar to those in THE SMILE METHOD as recommended treatment for periodontal disease. Yet, fewer than 5% of US general dentists and less than 25% of periodontists implement these simple dental gum treatments. Why? Because highly effective, do-it-yourself protocols such as those in THE SMILE METHOD -- especially those that utilize the VITA-PIK, which the author provides on order -- are not financially lucrative. Periodic root-planing and surgery are far bigger money-makers. It a national tragedy and a huge detriment to oral health that so many dental professionals ignore and fail to provide the simple treatments in this book, treatments that effectively addresses the root causes of gum disease. THE SMILE METHOD empowers consumers and enables us to effect our own safe, economical dental wellness. Carpe diem!
