From the Author

I love to write because I learn while I’m writing. I never approach writing a book as an expert. I believe that we are all teachers and students to one another. I write as a fellow human being that wants to learn more about peace and happiness. “Smile for No Good Reason” was written in this spirit.

People can and do begin smiling for no good reason when they find that in order to be happy they only need to change their own thinking and attitudes. I wrote this book because our culture can use a few more smiles from the heart that Attitudinal Healing can bring. By reading and practicing the material in this book, you can bring to the world a beautiful and peaceful smile. With family responsibilities and work deadlines to meet it can be tempting to become sidetracked and stressed by a multitude of little problems and to lose sight of what really matters. I believe that in this increasingly complicated world what is needed is to remind ourselves of what is most precious. “Smile for No Good Reason” serves this purpose.

I have noticed the changes people make are often only a short-term fix, with stress and conflict slowly creeping back in. This book was written after several years of seeing that changing life circumstances without addressing your thinking is like painting over rust: It will look great for a while, but eventually the old rust will slowly break through the new paint. After reading this book whatever changes you make will contribute to your lasting happiness rather than lead to another disappointment or failure.

In short, this book was written because I want all of us to recognize who we really are. When we do this we can't help but smile. Read this book and see how Attitudinal Healing can help you go through your day, responding to life's challenges with peace of mind rather than with fear, anger, and guilt. It is not as hard as you might think. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Attitudinal Healing is a philosophy based on the idea that "nothing needs to change in your life situation or the world in order for you to have peace of mind." In Smile For No Good Reason, Lee L. Jampolsky, Ph.D., psychologist, author, and consultant, offers simple and practical advice for creating happiness without doing anything except changing how we look at life.
The book is divided into twelve sections, one for each of the principles of Attitudinal Healing. Within each section are several vignettes illustrating how the principles can be applied in everyday life. Most vignettes are only a page, making them easy to read and understand.
The principles are based on the ideas that love and fear are the only two emotions, that the only problem is a feeling of separation, and that the solution is discovering that the essence of your being is love. Each section of the book is filled with stories and sayings that illustrate how to trade in fear for love.
Overcoming separation and discovering love requires changing fear-based attitudes, such as anger and guilt. Dr. Jampolsky says that "your attitude in solving any problem is far more important than the particular action you might take." He reminds us that the key is recognizing that "you're not upset because of what occurred, you are upset because of how you perceive the situation." He offers a huge variety of suggestions for changing perceptions and creating happiness.
He says we can start with a simple action like smiling, even if we don't think we have anything to smile about. Just that one little act will make a huge difference in how we look at our problems and how we interact with others. And when others smile back, suddenly we do have something to be happy about.
Dr.

This summer I found myself lost in dispare after losing several close relatives and battling my own personal illnesses. I began a slippery slope of questioning the purpose and point of life. I was in the deepest depression I had ever felt. It took all of my energy to go to work until one day I just completely snapped.

One of my dearest friends, who I knew would relate to my situation, sent a care package my way with this book enclosed. At first I wasn't sure if I would read the book, but since the chapters were short and brief it was easy to read a bit at a time. I was able to absorb each chapter at night and really think about how I could adjust my way of thinking and attitudes in order to find true happiness.

The most important chapters for me were the chapters that dealt with the past and forgiveness. I learned that I must let go of the past and forgive those who have done me wrong or else I will suffer in pain and never enjoy happiness. It seems like such an easy concept, but it takes time and you must forgive yourself first. I had to learn this concept first and foremost as I am my most harsh critic. Smile For No Good Reason will take you on a journey of finding true inner peace and happiness. You will rediscover the meaning of unconditional love for oneself and others. You will learn how to how to love--you may think you know, but you will be surprised at how we utilize fear and manipulation tactics to control the ones we love.

I am now in the process of supporting a friend who is going through some rough times and I am now passing on the book that I tribute to saving my life and giving me perspective on how to love myself all over again. I hope my friend will discover why we all love her too!

This is the type of book that you will read and think of that special person in your life that desperately needs more love and happiness in their life--their suffering must end...life is too short!

This book is one that you keep even if you bought it as a gift for another. It is packed with one line thoughts that are full of ideas that have meaning. It is easy to read as you can just skim the headlines for a quick read. The text is well written, not wordy, funny and wonderful.
Everytime I pick it up I find another "treasure of gold" to remember to keep me on track and focused on my good.

When day after day life spirals out of control, it becomes more and more meaningless. "Smile: For No Good Reason" encourages people that even though life itself may be hectic, annoying, painful, and just all around bad, it can't prevent you from finding what matters most of all: Peace of mind. "Smile: For No Good Reason" is a brilliant, practical approach to working towards attaining just that, without making any ridiculous and hasty life changes such as career or religion. "Smile: For No Good Reason" is highly recommended to all self-help shelves and for anyone who wants a better outlook on the grim world we live in.
