Review

"This simplified version of Deisen and Hanna’s The Pout-Pout Fish (2008) is appropriate for babies and toddlers . . . Simple and sweet, this tale offers the lesson that sometimes, all that’s needed for a turnaround in mood is some cheer and encouragement to change our perspective. The clean, uncluttered illustrations are kept simple, except for the pout-pout fish’s features, which are delightfully expressive. Little ones will easily recognize and likely try to copy the sad, scared and angry looks that cross the fish’s face. An upbeat early book on feelings with a simple storyline that little ones will respond to." - Kirkus Reviews

More About the Author

"The Pout-Pout Fish Goes to School" is now available! It's Mr. Fish's third full-length adventure. The other two are "The Pout-Pout Fish" and "The Pout-Pout Fish in the Big-Big Dark." All of the Pout-Pout Fish stories are illustrated by the fabulous Dan Hanna.

For babies and toddlers who are not quite ready for a full-length story, Mr. Fish has a mini-adventure board book called "Smile, Pout-Pout Fish." Just twelve pages long with one line of text per page, it's a simple tale about feelings. Next in the mini-adventure series will be "Sweet Dreams, Pout-Pout Fish," in January 2015.

I'm also the author of "The Barefooted, Bad-Tempered Baby Brigade" (illustrated by Tracy Dockray) and of "Picture Day Perfection" (illustrated by Dan Santat).

I was so excited to get this because my daughter LOVES her Pout Pout Fish board book, but it's like a dumbed down version of the original. There is very little text and the story doesn't have the smoochy ending. It's a nice book for a very young toddler who is not ready for the whole Pout Pout Fish book, but if choosing between the two I'd go for the original, and if you have the original, I wouldn't buy this one.

We are Pout-Pout fans and the youngest member of the fan club (1 1/2) loves the pictures and page turning. He now has his own book as we go over the longer version and he can turn pages back and forth. Everyone enjoys. Thanks for coming up with a simplified version for littler folks.

My LO, who is 8 months old, absolutely LOVES this book. We read it at least 2x/day. I highly recommend it for anyone with a small child (or adult, since I love it as well!).

I love Pout-Pout Fish! I'm a big fan, and I love to use the original Pout Pout Fish and Pout Pout Fish in the Big Big Dark in my preschool story times. They are always big hits. Smile is a very short intro to this charming character that is tailor made for the tiniest of story listeners. I am very excited to use this with my baby story time group, even though the size is a little small for group sharing. At only 12 pages, it's a short little story that gives baby a great first glimpse at emotions. Mr. Fish is as expressive as ever, and does a great job of showing the reader his worried, sad, sad, scared and mad faces. Of course we also get to see that famous pout, and all ends well when he gets cheered up at the end and delivers an exuberant smile. What cheers him up? You know it had to be a smooch.

This is a sturdy board book, so it will of course be able to withstand lots of love and repeat readings. The blue ocean color palette is as appealing as ever, and Mr. Fish's big expressive face perfectly complements a text that exhibits a wonderfully smooth read aloud flow. This little intro is heavy on charm and is a big recommend for infants and toddlers.

I was so excited to find out that a board book was being made available as my 2 year old destroyed the original Pout Pout Fish book. I didn't want to spend another $16 for him to ruin another book.

This board book was a great compromise as my son loves to kiss a happy pout pout fish at the end of the story. This book is beautifully illustrated and a quick read. Enjoy!

The book does a great job at teaching feelings, emotions, that my 2.5 year old son really gets into. We love the original "Pout Pout fish" book, the rhythm and rhymes, and i was looking forward to a sequel story. But this is so short, and doesn't have a long rhyming story like the original. He loves it, but dad was a little disappointed.

The rhymes are missing from the original story and the ending is disappointing.
