Editorial Reviews

Man's Gin was born in Colorado when Cobalt multi-instrumentalist Erik Wunder and a friend took up their their acoustic guitars and a bottle of cheap liquor and began writing lonely tributes to the drink in which they were drowning their sorrows. The collaboration yielded a batch of home-recorded songs they called The Rum Demos, and circulated among their small circle of friends. Fast-forward several years to 2009--Wunder was living in Brooklyn and Cobalt had just released Gin, one of the most celebrated metal albums of the year. Man's Gin songs had been kicking around in his head for years, and Wunder decided to resurrect the project, adding electric guitars and drums to the band's original acoustic guitar / vocal structure and enlisting the help of Josh Lozano and Scott Edward on grand piano and upright bass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing! September 1, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I recently just discovered Cobalt via the Gin CD and loved it despite some of the harsher vocal stylings of Erik Wunder. I read about Man's Gin (on Fark of all places) and decided to give it a try. I wish I were a decent writer so I could accurately convey to the readers how good this CD is, but I am not, I just hope that others will listen to it and spread the word. Although predominantly an acoustic piece this CD rocks mainly due to the emphasized low end tones that give it a gruff and heavy feel, Wunders' vocals are deep and soulful, every song has something to say, there is not filler here. If I had to compare Smiling Dogs to something else I would say Alice in Chains 'Jar of Flies' but there is so much more to it than that, in my mind this is an instant classic, I hope you give it a try - despite my lack of reviewing skills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Erik Wunder Solo Style November 16, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Cobalt's multi-instrumentalist Erik Wunder has struck out with a solo project and released what may be the most criminally under-the-radar "heavy" release of 2010. As noted by Man's Gin from the go-ahead, their musical medium is closer to Alice in Chains and American folk(ish) rock than the blackened metal of Cobalt. "Death of Jimmy Sturgis" bears a distinct sonic resemblance to Alice in Chains. Wunder is still intense on most of the tracks here, and he lets us know that Phil McSorley isn't the only talented voice in their dynamic duo. I only wish it was a bit longer because the tunes are that enjoyable, but I suppose the ~43 minute running time is about right, as it's lean and mean (with some chill moments). This is a wonderful experience that deserves more attention that it may be getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Recording! September 10, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Smiling Dog's is from one of the two members of Cobalt, whom created Gin, which is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. Mans gin is a singer/songwriter album, acoustic and absolutely brilliant. It reminds me of Nick Cave, Tom Waits and even acoustic Alice in Chains. Buy Cobalt's Gin and this album if you like inspired powerfull music.
