GIGANTIC WASTE OF MONEY, March 23, 2009
This review is from: Smith & Hawken® Marlton 2008 Club Chair (Kitchen)
I shelled out about $400 for this chair, the ottomon, and the shipping and handling. I've been totally and completely cheated of my money. And as I'm not wealthy, this is something of a disaster for me.
I've put together a lot of mail order furniture, and consider myself pretty adept at it, but this is the worst experience with assembling furniture I've ever had.
The chair arrived WITHOUT THE HARDWARE to put it together. That's right--no screws, bolts or washers. I looked at the packaging slip, which said to call a 1-800 number if parts were missing or defective. It was only an answering machine, which told me to email my request for parts. The parts eventually arrived, but the BOLTS were the wrong size for the screw threads in the chair! It was completely impossible to assemble, even with a power drill, and not the delicate little allen wrench provided.
One couldn't even force the bolts with a very powerful drill, and in any case, that would be dangerous, since despite the description above, this chair is NOT HARDWOOD. It is pine. PINE. That's right. A two hundred plus dollar pine chair. If you forced the bolts, the light weight wood would probably split.
I contacted the parts people again, and even though my complaint was courteous, they snootily informed me that they had sent the parts out within hours of my request. Um, but what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? Yes, they mailed them, but they don't fit and they're the wrong ones, and I'm stuck with the pieces of what amounts to be very expensive firewood.
Trying to return this thing will be a huge nightmare. Amazon has informed me that this is not their fault the chair is defective, and so I must eat the shipping costs, which will amount to $120 coming and going.
I've done a lot of business with Amazon over the years, but I will never, never, never buy anything from them again that isn't books.
I'm also disappointed, because I've been a fan of Paul Hawken and own his books. I feel like a chump for trusting something with his name attached.
UPDATE: I attempted to bring a piece of the chair to the hardware store, to see if I could buy my own bolts. No luck! The hardware store manager told me that the screw threads were likely "proprietary". Perhaps the reason the parts department couldn't supply me the correctly sized bolts is because they recalibrated their machines or something, and the bolts with that screw thread no longer exist. Just a thought. So yes, the chair wood went into the firewood pile.
The green seat cushion has become a dog bed.
The ottomon has become a guinea pig cage platform.
I kept the printed back pillow, because it was pretty.
And like the other dissatisfied customer, the fabric has completely faded out. But mine has been kept exclusively indoors, and wasn't exposed to the sun.
I see that the price of this item has gone down $70 since I purchased it. It still wouldn't be worth it if you can't put it together.

Poor Fabric Quality - Don't use in full sun!, August 23, 2008
This review is from: Smith & Hawken® Marlton 2008 Club Chair (Kitchen)
We purchased the dining set, 2 loveseats, 2 club chairs, and an end table from this collection 2 months ago. They are on our deck, which admittedly gets full sun most of the day. We do have a retractable awning which we keep out much of the time. The wood has held up very well (although I do recommend using teak oil on it regularly), but the fabric is horribly faded. And it does not fade consistently. Some of the pillows have turned a bright green, and others gray. It looks awful. At this point, I don't feel like dealing with the hassle of returning it, so I will probably just recover the cushions with a better fabric next summer. I would recommend this furniture for a shaded area, but definitely NOT for a sunny area. What is most shocking to me is that it faded within 3-4 weeks of getting it. A year or two, and I would not be shocked, but to me, this is not "outdoor furniture."
