VMware Workstation works by enabling multiple operating systems to run on physical computers in virtual machines. Operating systems and software applications are isolated in these secure virtual machines that coexist on a single piece of hardware. Current generation and legacy applications can coexist on one computer and be updated easily. Operating systems can be added or changed without repartitioning disks or rebooting. Build complex networks for developing new applications, and test and deploy them, all on a single computer.

VmWare 3.0 (Linux),
By Robert E Gordon (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VMware 3.0 for Linux (CD-ROM)
At my job I use a stable Linux workstation, however we are often forced to use windows systems due to needing Microsoft Explorer for "web enabled" applications. VmWare has allowed me to continue running a stable environment yet still access the Microsoft products that are required within the company.Beyond that, it comes in real handy for doing "proof of concept" testing. I can lab out an entire enviroment (with Windows boxes, Linux stations, etc) right on my desktop. Instead of needing 4 - 5 computers to do testing, I just need to run 4 - 5 virtual machines. The only real limitation is the amount of memory that you have! Overall I feel that this is a great investment especially if you need stability yet can't get fully away from Windows.
