Most Helpful Customer Reviews

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Levi Keene on February 25, 2009
Format: Paperback
When placed side to side with the original Smith Rock guide book, this is hands down, inferior. It does not have the same level of detail, does not show the actual bolt placements on the rock, does not show the artist's rendering of the rock face, and the comments usually lack something to be desired. Even so, it is up to date and has lots of color pictures to get you pumped about climbing. I recommend this select book for both beginners and advanced climbers, but most advanced climbers will want the original book to supplement the former's inadequacies.

Format: Paperback
Smith Rock Select delivers on it's title. Sure, it's not as comprehensive as the ever popular Alan Watt's Climber's Guide to Smith Rock, but if you're an out-of-towner or cheap you probably don't need to invest and lug around the 'Bible'.

Smith Rock Select has plenty of pictures and descriptions for you to find an enjoyable route and find the first bolts. Smith Rock Select has the classics and isn't solely written for beginner or intermediates, you'll be able figure out what route the grunts are coming from and read up on beta as you watch someone tackle To Bolt or Not to Be. If you're looking for something a little more out of the way, or newer, you'll be able to borrow someone else's yellow book and chat them up on the beta.
