5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the job!
The 9 in.(approx) S&W Paul Bunyan Hatchet is the pefect backpacking hatchet! It's light, durable and has an extremely comfortable grip. Along with a healthy size cutting edge and a checkered blunt side for hammering.(It is NOT an axe so, don't expect to split 12 in. rounds)
It's only short-coming (might) be the sheath? It's safe, versatile and well designed but,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very well made, tought to get the right leverage for splitting
First, this is a great product and I bring it with me on our car camping, and pack/backcountry hikes. It is very good for chopping small sticks and small logs, but virtually useless for splitting logs. Because of the short handle you are unable to get the correct leverage for such use. I don't necessarily believe that's what this is intended for anyway, but just be...

When one considers the price of this hatchet, compared to ALL the the others, you will not spend your money more wisely.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone!(budget or not)

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid! Ready to use out of the box. No sharpening needed., March 8, 2011

This is a solid well made hatchet. Comfortable and balanced. very sharp out of the box and I don't think you would want to sharpen it more because a hatchet with a razor edge will dull quickly. Quality heavy sheath as well. Just what you would expect from Smith and Wesson. If I lost this hatchet in the woods, I would not hesitate for one second to buy another one with even looking at other products.

5.0 out of 5 stars great durable hatchet, July 18, 2010
This review is from: Smith & Wesson CK670 Bullseye Paul Bunyan Hatchet Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
I took this hatchet backpacking because it was light weight and affordable. Everyone laughed at me when I pulled this small hatchet out of its sheathe, but they weren't laughing by the end of the trip. This hatchet chopped wood better than any saw or hatchet that anyone brought on our trip. It was sharp, powerful, and efficient. By the end of the week all the other hatchets were broken and unusable but mine was still going strong, it is all one solid piece so the head won't break off the handle. This hatchet literally saved our lives and I would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small but good, July 18, 2010

I needed a small axe to throw in my pack. This ax is small enough to put in my pack, but able to cut for fire wood, hammer tent poles in, and not be as bulky as a large ax or hammer. It came with a nice nylon sheath, the handle feels good in the hand and the blade came sharp and really has not disappointed me. It's a hatchet and not an ax. So if you are looking to split logs, this may not be for you. But if you are out and need it for smaller misc. jobs this hatchet is right for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars So close..., September 15, 2007

Really wanted to like this product...its made of good quality metal and the synthetic handle seems sturdy. Problem is it really is a "small job" axe and I was trying to use it for more. Hack through some limbs, even up to an inch or two thick, should be too much of a problem. It just doesn't have the shaft length to be splitting wood or really bite into thicker limbs though...and when I was trying to use it as such (middle of February with 3 feet of snow on the ground) that's not the thing I wanted to hear.

If you're looking for something lightweight to break up smaller limbs and such, but don't need to really be "working wood" this could do very nicely. Didn't work for my intended purposes, but good at what it can do.

2.0 out of 5 stars Cast, not forged, head is fragile if hammered, November 17, 2011
By
This review is from: Smith & Wesson CK670 Bullseye Paul Bunyan Hatchet Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
This small hatchet seems to have a lot going for it. I liked the compact size, great sharp edge, and a pretty decent sheath. I took it out back to my fire pit and it cut well. Then I struck the back of the hatchet (with a different hatchet I was testing) to split a half a log. After about three strikes I discovered that this hatchet head is cast metal, not forged as anyone would expect. The casting narrows where the handle molding covers the head, and it had snapped right in two. This was a first for me dealing with any axe or hatchet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cuts nicely, August 1, 2010
This review is from: Smith & Wesson CK670 Bullseye Paul Bunyan Hatchet Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
Did some pre-trip chopping and it was nice.

Come time to weigh in, this was the first thing I removed. It's not fair to the product but it really does weigh too much to be brought on any serious backpacking trip. Small chain style saw would be better.

2.0 out of 5 stars pretty pointless tool, May 4, 2010

Well, I bought this hatchet for a backpacking trip because of its weight and the decent reviews on Amazon. The weight is nice and I like the sheath it comes with. I could easily attach it to my pack. My problem, though, is it doesn't really chop any limbs that you can't just break over your knee. Anything thicker than that was a major chore to get through and after one trip, the blade is already damaged. The point of camping equipment is to be small, lightweight, and efficient. This hatchet just doesn't do enough to ever make me take it on another trip.
