Great beginner bike, August 22, 2005
This review is from: Smith & Wesson Perimeter Police Mountain Bike (16-Inch Frame) (Sports)
I bought this bike after comparing different bikes online and in bike stores. I was tempted to buy a Mongoose bike on sale for $159.00 at Walmart but the frame weight was on the heavy side. The bikes I saw at a bike store were better quality but the markups were a little bit high and the sales people seemed more intrested in putting down "disposable bikes" that I was inquiring about than helping me find the right bike.
I found the bike at Amazon.com but also considered the Jeep Cherokee brand mountain bike. I got the bike the other day, and it came partly assembled. If there's one caveat, it's that it doesn't come with any assembly instructions. I eventually figured it out and set off to try the bike out at the beach. I went about 6 miles total and I had a great time. I had to adjust the seat post a couple of times, but the bike handles great and the gear shifters worked great.
Recommended for beginning/casual bikers who want a more than decent bike at a decent price.
PROS:
-24-Speed Bike
-SRAM Grip Shift shifters
-Light-weight
-Extras include bottle holders, rear kickstand, and rear rack.
-Accelerates really fast and handles great.
-Similar bikes cost about $350.00+
CONS:
-16" frame (make sure you get measured for the proper bike size for your body size).
-The pedals include a useless foot guard.
-No assembly instructions.
-Only comes in one frame color (white)
-No rear suspension (only important if you want to take this bike off-road, otherwise it doen't really matter)

Mini Toe Clips, August 30, 2005
This review is from: Smith & Wesson Perimeter Police Mountain Bike (16-Inch Frame) (Sports)
The previous reviewer listed as a "CON" that this bike is equipped with "toe guards". They are actually commonly referred to as "mini-toe clips" and perform a function similar to full toe clips and straps. #1 they help position your foot on the pedal, not too far forward and not too far rearward. #2 they help keep your foot from slipping off the pedal, especially to the front and #3 they allow you to pull up on the pedals slightly as you pedal adding power to your pedal stroke (this is where full clips and straps or clipless pedals are much better).
Far from useless, for some riders mini's are all that is needed.

Smith & Wesson Perimeter Bike, October 24, 2005
This review is from: Smith & Wesson Perimeter Police Mountain Bike (16-Inch Frame) (Sports)
Well built bike for the money, has components more likely found on a 400-500 dollar bike. But like the other review stated, no assembly instructions with the unit, which wasn't that big of a deal, but what annoyed me was my bike didn't come with the skewer for the front tire, and there was no way to contact them to get one sent to me, so I had to go out and buy my own. I don't think they're really interested in selling this item to the public, the bike was originally designed for law enforcement use, but all the cops I see are riding Mongoose. So in conclusion, nice bike for the money, horrible customer service.
