3.0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad
The Good: It's only $40; no exposed CO2 screw, cool magazine (i love dropping it out and popping it back in - much like a real gun), decent power. I get @ 75 good shots per CO2.

The Bad: It feels like a toy. All plastic (except for the trigger and magazine). Feels like cheap plastic and hollow/not solid. Accuracy is probably standard for a pistol like...

At first I hesitated getting this BB pistol, but I liked the design of the REAL pistol so much, I just had to check it out.
And at LESS than $40 (back when I got it in January, anyway), I figured what the heck...

I was NOT disappointed!

The pistol weighs in under a pound, is all composite material, but DOES have a metal clip that drops from the grip (nice). It has a good heft to it, and comes pretty close to a REAL S&W M&P 40 (empty).

It holds around 19-20 rounds (BBs) depending on how crowded you want them, and the release for the clip has the same actuator as the REAL deal.
The pistol has a manual safety on the right side of the frame exactly where your trigger finger falls, so it's VERY easy to place ON or OFF.

Now...for the really "good" stuff.

The pistol is WICKED accurate (within fifteen feet - the length of my basement "shooting gallery"), and even shooting off-hand, one-handed, you can hit what you're aiming at with relative ease, in spite of FIXED front & rear sights.
Front sight is a blade w/ white dot - rear sight is green fiber optic loop w/ 2 dots. Be nice if the rear sight was adjustable, but it really doesn't need it all that much.

It's a straight-shooter!
And it doesn't mind being SHOT FAST one bit.

It is DOUBLE-ACTION only, so you've got a long trigger pull, but it's under 5 pounds, therefore, no finger fatigue.
I have torn the heck out of several soda cans with NO ricochet, so that means it WILL penetrate...remember that.
Get a good backstop if indoors.
The pistol is rated at 480 FPS w/ a range of 350 YDS.
I'd have to say that with a fresh CO2 cartridge loaded, that's pretty darned close. It's got BALLS, that's for sure.

I managed about 80-90 shots per 12G cylinder, so no complaints there.
If there are any "faults" to speak of...I just wish it had a BLOWBACK feature. It CRIES OUT for it.

When I opened it up, I even tried to "rack" it, and then remembered the slide was fixed. Yeah, it looks THAT real.
And since it LOOKS real, be careful NOT to be doing anything that neighbors or police might take an "interest" in...it WILL fool most anyone and could be taken to be a REAL pistol.

This is one of THE best BB pistols for the price.
Umarex swung with this and knocked it clean OUT of the ballpark.
In other words...they "DONE GOOD".
Now...all I need are a few more MAGS.
Shoot safely and enjoy yourself.

Bob G.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great BB Gun, September 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Smith & Wesson M&P BB Pistol Black Finish Semi-Auto CO2 Md: 2255050 (Misc.)
I've had this gun for about 2 months now and I love it. It looks very realistic and has a fairly heavy feel to it. The FPS seems very near the stated value -- it's definitely powerful. It's a great gun for target shooting or keeping those pesky rodents out of your garden. However, it should be noted that if you're looking for an airsoft gun, THIS IS NOT IT. This is a BB GUN and CANNOT be used in airsoft arenas. The difference is that this uses 4.5mm copper (i've yet to find plastic) rounds whereas airsoft uses 6mm plastic rounds.

Now my only real issues with this gun are these: VERY hard to find extra magazines. I've only found ONE site that claims they sell extra magazines for this gun and it was priced at $35 -- practically the cost of the gun. Another issue I have is with the magazine itself. At the beginning, the magazine held the rounds well, but it's slowly starting to malfunction. That is, the piece that holds the rounds from flying out of the magazine doesn't always do it's job. It often takes me 2 or 3 times to actually load the magazine because everytime I let the spring come forward, the rounds go flying out. And it's not because I let the spring just fly -- I do ease it up. That piece just doesn't hold the bb's down nearly as well anymore. My last issue is the trigger -- you have to squeeze the trigger to the VERY END, and that little spring action at the end really throws your aim off. Now it's not an issue with larger, torso sized, targets but if you're going for pinpoint accuracy, it'll definitely take some practice to compensate for it.

In the end, this is a GREAT bb gun for the price. I love mine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Choice, August 20, 2009
This review is from: Smith & Wesson M&P BB Pistol Black Finish Semi-Auto CO2 Md: 2255050 (Misc.)
Packaging: Plastic case, same as other pistols like this get.

Look:
Nice, sleek and realistic. Does not have a visible screw for the co2 on the outside. Has front rails, if your into that sort of thing.

Safety: On the right side, have to push it in to move it forward and back. Lefties would have trouble with this.

Trigger:
Long, lots of creep. Gets to a pretty tough point and then it'll shoot. Could of been better.

Feel:
Feels real, has a good heft, not as heavy as the real thing. The magazine is metal, and its pretty smart loading system once you get the hang of it, but an extra mag would be nice. I hear this can use the Crosman C11 magazines, if so, make sure you get the .177 and not the 6mm.

Sights/Accuracy:
The rear sights are green fiber optic, front sight is a post with a painted dot. On my gun, the white dot was off center, doesn't matter too much, but still something i noticed.
A pretty accurate gun, at around 50 ft, i can hit wrist thick trees no problem. After that, the bb's will start to veer a little, but i'd say its still accurate past that.

Sound:
Bit quieter than a spring airsoft pistol.

Co2 use:
Just slide the handgrip back and that opens up the housing for the co2. Place it in and screw. I've shot about 5 mags before the co2 gets low, so thats about 90 shots. (Magazine holds 17-19 rounds, depending how you do it).

I'd say its definitely a good buy. At 480 ft/s, it shoots faster than anything Wal-Mart carries instock right now, also better looking. Smith & Wesson did a real good job here. Easy to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Got better with age. 1 year update, January 30, 2010

Umarex Smith & Wesson M&P BB Pistol Black Finish Semi-Auto CO2 Model 2255050

Second Update Jan 2, 2011
I originally bought this as a gift for a relative but got plenty of trigger time in the first months.

After a year and a lot of use, my relative informed me that the trigger has smoothed out and loosened up some. The accuracy is still dead on accurate and the number of shots per co2 cartridge seems constant. I'm adding 1 star.

Purchased for Christmas gift 2009
The unit is identical to the real thing in every respect. The magazine design is a joy to use, loading 19 BB's is as easy as locking the mag spring open, and pouring the BB's in. The mag actually ejects when the mag release is pressed. The unit is light as a feather, and the sights are really nice. Almost thought they were tritium for a minute there. The power is right up there with a T4, but BB's only. I averaged around 80 BB's before I lost most of my gas power.

But the trigger leaves you frustrated. It's gritty and long with a lot of lbs needed to get it all the way back. If they fix that trigger, this would be a very nice plinker.

Summary: Lot of fun, pretty inexpensive, but poor built quality. I ordered the Walther CP99 blowback the next day because I read it feels pretty real (UPS is delivering it tomorrow, oh ya!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate, hard-hitting, CO2 miser, inexpensive, and yes, lightweight, September 28, 2011

I am surprised at all the negative reviews. Let's hit them, one by one. I'm not talking about the airsoft gun, I'm talking about the BB gun.

1) Can't find magazines? Nonsense. Look at Walmart. They sell a package of two mags under the Crosman name for about thirteen bucks. They fit perfectly. While on the subject of the mags: easy to load, vs. some I've seen. You can easily make yourself a little BB loader to feed a stream of BBs right into the hole. That's because the groove for the spring slider is in line with the BB loading hole. I can fit 20 BBs in the mag with no jamming. I think it's advertised as holding 19. And the same magazine fits the Beretta Elite II replica BB gun, also from Umarex.

2) CO2 leaks? Not if you use a TINY dab of Pellgunoil on the tip of the cartridge before loading it. Do that and you will have no problems (others have mentioned this). I've had no leakage at all. This gun is a CO2 miser. In the summer, I can easily go through eight or nine, 20-rd mags on one cylinder. I'm really amazed at how long this gun remains accurate over varying amounts of CO2 remaining.

3) Accuracy. The trigger is long and hard (double action only), but like any other gun, you need to get used to it. Once you do, you can pop off accurate shots very quickly. Now remember, you are sending a round projectile (BB) down a smooth bore (think: Revolutionary War musket). You cannot expect rifled accuracy. You WILL get fliers--I sometimes think, "I was shooting the OTHER can, right?" But folks, I shoot soda cans at 25 feet and can hit them almost every single time. AND I can shoot a single can, hanging from a branch 25 yards away, yes, with fewer hits, but geez, 25 YARDS, people, and that's off-hand. On one knee, I can hit that can at 25 yards 1/3 to 1/2 of the time. I've since switched to homemade tubular (chime) targets at 25 yards, it's so much fun.

-- An aside on these BB triggers. The double-action trigger needs to first pull the inner barrel forward against a spring, so that when the trigger "breaks", the barrel can spring backward and activate the release of the CO2 to fire the BB. LOTS of BB handguns use the same mechanism, and have similar trigger pulls.

4) Sights. Did anyone mention them? They are wonderful. Non-adjustable, but bright and easy to see (white in front and fiber-optic green in rear).

5) No blowback. Who cares? Go buy a blowback gun and stop dissing this one.

6) Too much plastic, too lightweight, etc. See #5.

You want a useful negative comment? Here you are: The CO2 door (the sliding handle) is too easy to come off and difficult to get back on. But it does not happen that often and I'm not knocking it down a star for that.

Here's another one (and again, it's minor, so no knocks on the stars): If you partially pull the trigger (take up), then change your mind, a BB will be released into the barrel and will slide out when you lower the muzzle.

Remember this is a BB gun, and an inexpensive one at that. Pretty doggon' nice for the money, in my book.

There is a guy on YouTube who does great reviews on replica airguns. I'm not going to plug his site directly, but if you can google, you can find it. In my opinion, he puts too much emphasis on moving parts, blowback, and other features which would make the guns more realistic, but he still does a very thorough review, and they are worth watching.

Good luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars M&P is a great gun!, August 3, 2010
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Smith & Wesson M&P BB Pistol Black Finish Semi-Auto CO2 Md: 2255050 (Misc.)
I got my co2 m&p a while ago. I found it on amazon, but bought it at Academy. I am a big fan of air guns and love to hunt/target practice with them. This is a great gun!
I do recommend this gun to beginners as well as experienced shooters. My only regret is that this is not blow-back. I like the blow-back feature because it adds realism. The down side to the moving slide is that it releases more CO2 than necessary because it requires more power to kick back the slide. I am clarifying any misunderstanding now. This gun is NOT blow-back!
The worst thing about this gun is the trigger! It requires way too much effort than it should. My finger got really tired after only one clip. Speaking of the clip, it is very good. It is all metal. But make sure you load it from the little hole in the back of the clip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy, March 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Smith & Wesson M&P BB Pistol Black Finish Semi-Auto CO2 Md: 2255050 (Misc.)
I actually bought it because I own the real deal and got a kick out of it, and was very impressed with it. For the price it is a very good value. If you're looking for a perfect imitation of the real M&P40, this is not it. It does, however, come pretty close (use good sense).

The technicals: I was really surprised by the power of this gun, a couple targets I have for others didnt stand up to it. With good BB's it is very accurate and the FO rear sight works great (I wish it had a FO front as well). The rail accepts real accessories and a laser sight is pretty fun. The safety is in a great location and is easy to use. The mags actually hold up to 20 BBs and you get about 10 mags out of 1 cylinder. It DOES NOT come with a CO2 cylinder, as I was led to believe from the description.

In short, this is a very fun and reliable BB gun. Order it and don't look back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings, June 28, 2009
By
Mice III (Grizzly Hills, MN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Smith & Wesson M&P BB Pistol Black Finish Semi-Auto CO2 Md: 2255050 (Misc.)
I like the feel, weight, balance, trigger pull, etc.
I get several misfires. CO2 pops, but no projectile leaves the barrel. To clear the 'jam' I drop the magazine and a loose BB will drop out. Although this does not happen with every load, I would say it does happen 3 out of 4 reloads, and when it does happen, it happens only 1,2, or 3 times per magazine.

I contacted AmarexUS and they promptly sent out a second magazine, but the trouble persists.

Conclusion: I may've gotten a dud, but I still enjoy the gun.
P.S. Do Not use the Walther Shot Spot Universal Laser sight with this unit... The action of the gun sent the two LR44 batteries through the bottom of the sight, shattering the plastic sight body.

I've owned over a dozen CO2 pistols over the years and this S&W is the best todate. After over 5,000 shots it has NEVER jammed or misfired. It is very accurate up to 35 feet and it feels solid. I bought the earth brown color and love it. The spring clip in the grip magazine is easy to load and reliable. My advice is...buy this gun. You'll love it.
