Perfect knife!,

This knife is absolutely perfect! It has a simple but effective locking mechanism, and when you want to open the blade you can either use the thumb stud on the blade or pull a small lever on the back with your finger. The torsion-assist takes over as soon as you move the blade out a few degrees, or pull the lever all the way down, and has enough power to fully open the blade into a locked-open position every time!
If you want a good assisted opening knife, I recommend this knife right here. Every knife I've ever gotten from Smith and Wesson has been the highest quality knife I've ever had (no joke) and always come with an extremely sharp edge. Seriously, if I could give this knife more than 5 stars I would. *Edit* I forgot to mention that the grip on this knife is the same as the gritty surface on skateboards. It doesn't feel very rough, but gives GREAT grip, even if your hands are wet or greasy or whatever.

Strong and fast. Pocket clip is on the folding end (opposite of most). Sandpaper grip on non-clip side. Clip not reverseable. Looks good also. Good Value

Great Pocket Knife,

This review is from: Smith & Wesson SWATMBS Swat Medium Serrated Assisted Opening Knife, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
PROS:
Opens smooth and quick. Sharp Blade that holds its edge well Two ways to open (thumb or index finger) Sandpaper Grip Safety (keeps the assisted open from opening in your pocket) CONS: Could be slightly shorter for pocket carry UPDATE (1/27/2011): I've had the knife and carried it in my pocket daily. Yesterday the knife got stuck open and after wiggling it around, it snapped closed (not on my fingers luckily). Now the safety doesn't work at all. I'm going to see if the warranty will cover it, but I'll have to pay to mail it to them, and include payment of $[...] for return shipping... lame.

Bought this knife over a month ago and feel I can now write a fair review of it. I'm fifteen years old and a Life Scout in BSA. I bought this knife because I haven't had a knife with serration before, and with the teaching jobs that I have to do for BSA I need to cut rope and cord and many other things. Read all the reviews and decided (obviously) to buy it. I am a big fan of this knife and here's why:
PROS: This knife (on one side) has skateboard type grip tape for excellent grip even when my hands are oily or wet or whatever. The AO on this knife works like a dream. Fast and strong opening. If you catch your finger on the back when you open it, it'll hurt. Once opened it doesn't wiggle around. Stays very secure. All of my friends AO knives wiggle once they're in the open and locked position. This knife doesn't! Locking mechanism is very safe. To unlock the blade so you can flip it open, you slide the... button thing down. This is a great feature because when you put it in your pocket it won't slip unlocked and accidentally open in your pocket. To unlock it so you can close it after the blade is in the locked and open position there is... I don't know how to describe it other than a bent piece of metal in the middle of the knife (like a latch thing) that you have to push over to unlock the blade so you can close it and put it away. The thumb stud opening as well as the finger lever both work great! If you've never had a thumb stud AO knife before (Like me) then the thumb stud does take a few days to work out exactly how to open it. After you figure it out though it's easy as pie. And lastly, the blade came, and has stayed very very sharp! CONS: The slide lock mechanism broke on me a few weeks after I got it. But later I figured out that a very small screw on the inside of the handle had come loose. I put some glue in the screw hole and screwed it back in and have had no problems since! The other side of the handle (side with the clip) does not have the grip tape. It's a hard plastic, grip tape textured surface. I don't think it's a huge deal though. The clip is there so you get grip off that. Other notes: I remember seeing some people saying that a spring broke in their knife, and that they were upset about that. I have not had this problem at all. My knife's worked superbly and I have no complaints. I think it's a wonderful knife and I've already suggested it to friends! Only thing is, do watch those little screws on the inside, they might need to be glued in/tightened. Other than that small nuisance I think this is the best AO knife out there!

For only $30, you are getting one hell of a blade. The grip is made of a nice rubber material, while the blade is sharp as hell.
This knife makes one hell of a self-defense weapon. When I got this thing in my pocket (it's perfect size for pockets), I know I'm fairly safe. If someone tries to mug me, one thing for certain is I ain't going down without a fight. It also makes for a fantastic utility knife. I use this knife to open boxes, cut strings, unscrew or screw things, and so on. It really can do just about anything, which is a quality I look for in my knives. I've owned this thing for several months, and she's still fighting strong. I see this baby lasting another couple years, and when she finally succumbs to fate, I'm going to buy another one. That's how much I love this knife. Conclusion: BUY!

I purchased this knife for my son who is a lifeguard at a state reservoir that can have ocean-like waves in the afternoon. He needed a knife to quickly cut through rope and nylon cord. This knife is unbelievably sharp. It is easy to operate with only one hand and slices through rope like butter. Caution should be taken knowing that you can easily cut yourself and not know it. The rough handle will be perfect in slippery, wet conditions.

This knife is among the best I have owned. The initial pull on the stud to open the knife is a bit stiff, but seems to get better after a few pulls. The non slip side feels like 100 grit sandpaper. I purchased a SWAT knife back in 2000 and still have it, so I know these are well built. This knife is well built, sturdy, sharp and priced right. Smith & Wesson makes a great product!

Knife was delivered on 11/02/10 and I love the thing. Decently sharp right out of the box. Opens quickly with just a small press on the release. The safety is a nice option too. Only one problem: As of 12/18/10, about 6 1/2 weeks after I received the knife, the assisted opening mechanism has stopped working completely. Nothing happens when I press the release switch. Feels like something broke inside, no resistance on the release switch at all anymore. Going to Contact Smith & Wesson because I have heard rumor that all their products have a lifetime guarantee, so we'll see how it goes. Hopefully they can fix or replace this knife for free because I really do like the thing a lot.

Amazing Quality For Price,

This review is from: Smith & Wesson SWATMBS Swat Medium Serrated Assisted Opening Knife, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
I recently bought this knife in a spree of shopping for friends before Christmas. I was pleasantly surprised when I came home to discover that the knife had ARRIVED A DAY EARLY. I opened the package and removed the knife from the box and plastic cover. I was immediately struck by the size and quality of the knife. I had thought that for the price range, the knife would surely be smaller than most others, but the blade of the knife is about 3 or 4 inches with a beautiful shine to it. The Assisted Opening is very responsive and fairly safe with a switch to lock the blade. Also the amount of force needed to open the knife from the back switch is nearly impossible to do accidentally. The edge of the blade is VERY sharp and should be handled carefully. One side note is that while opening the blade WITHOUT using the AO feature (that is, opening it with both hands) the blade tends to swing open with a good amount of momentum about halfway through opening it (you may also feel stupid for cutting my my- i mean 'your'self within 5 minutes of opening the package -_-). Overall, I'm extremely pleased with this product and would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good quality knife for small tasks or just someone who enjoys having a kick-ass knife handy.
