5.0 out of 5 stars Bang for your buck
I recently purchased this knife and was amazed at the wonderful quality for so cheap. The blade lock-up is VERY tight absolutly no wiggle what-so-ever. The deployment is quite slow but with some wrist flick it speeds up the process some. It is rather heavy at 5.7 ounces but it is a tough knife. It has the flow-through design so mud and water can flow on through. The clip...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a Rescue Knife
Got this to replace my Smith & Wesson work knife thinking that the glass breaker and the seat belt cutter would be a great addition. The blade itself comes very sharp and I'm pleased with that, though the profile is a bit larger than I'm used to. The liner lock is solid, like the other knife I had. The weight is good and I'm sure the glass breaker would work fine, but the...

The weight is good and I'm sure the glass breaker would work fine, but the safety cutter does NOT work. I work for a company that makes car seats and we have seat belt material sitting around, the safety cutter will not cut it, won't cut rope, can't cut paper, I see no applicable use for the safety cutter, in fact I feel that if you tried to use the safety cutter in an emergency situation it would do more harm than good because you would be waisting a lot of time trying to make it work instead of just turning the knife around and using the blade.

Maybe I got a defective blade, I don't know, I'm going to contact smith & wesson and if nothing happens there, I'm giong to take the knife apart and try to sharpen the safety cutter.

And if that doesn't work, I'll just use it as a regular knife until I can upgrade.

The deployment is quite slow but with some wrist flick it speeds up the process some. It is rather heavy at 5.7 ounces but it is a tough knife. It has the flow-through design so mud and water can flow on through. The clip is tip down non-movable, however is sits very deeply in the pocket. The steel liner is not skeletonized but it is attached with adjustable screws to disassemble the knife if necessary. Out of the box the blade needs quite the touching up on its edge, for it is rather dull. There is a small thumb ramp, but no grooves to catch your thumb, however the underneath hold the index finger superbly. The handle itself is very ergonomic and just wants to be held.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid craftmanship, June 7, 2010

For the price, this knife is very hard to beat. It is very solid, and has a nice hefty feel. As a defense weapon, the weight lends to using it as a blunt impact weapon, and the blade has good balance. Opening it is a breeze...a quick flick of wrist and push with thumb will have it locked open...(don't know what some other reviewers complaint about opening mechanism could have been about...I've had this for over a month now...very smooth from get go).

2.0 out of 5 stars Solid knife ruined by poor opening, March 4, 2010

As the other reviewer stated, this is a solid, sturdy knife with excellent lock-up. However the blade is so stiff through its entire range of motion that it's just a pain to use. It requires a LOT of wrist action. Closing it is also uncomfortable because the liner lock is extremely stiff. Sadly the pivot is riveted and non-adjustable.

It did come nice and sharp (regular blade and seat belt cutter) and gives a decent (though not amazing) grip, but all its other good qualities just can't overcome the difficult opening and closing for me. I'm debating whether it's worth the hassle to return it. I purchased a Emergency EMT Paramedic Insignia Rescue and Safety Knife with Matte Black Stainless Steel Blade which surprisingly turned out to be a far superior blade, and for less money.

Comes with a very nice edge on it, which it has held well so far. Some good heft to it. Action is smooth.

This knife is amazing. It's solid, heavy, arrived extremely sharp and the feel of it is just great in your hand. I wasn't sure about it when i bought it since it's only $14, but I don't go anywhere without it. Best knife I've ever bought.

Good knife, with a good blade. It is a S&W manufactured in China, but has good quality.

Pro:
Good blade
Screws to adjust, that is good to avoid "looseness"

Contra:
The seatbelt cutter is not so good, but who cares?

I am satisfied with the product.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Knife Rules, August 12, 2010

I got this knife just about 3 days ago, as a precaution. I was traveling to Florida in a rental car and wanted to be prepared. When I recieved it in the mail I could not believe the quality I had in my hand for under 20 bucks. This knife is sturdy...one of the most sturdy knives I have ever had the pleasure of carrying. It has weight but it is evenly balanced, and deployes very smooth. The steel is excellent quality, took an edge very quickly and is holding it. If I had one complaint it would be that this knife is made in China. Still it is of the quality you would expect from Smith and Wesson, and this being my first knife from them...I am very impressed especially at the unbelievable price I got it for. It is even a first production run. I love this knife. As I mentioned before it does need to be sharpened a little more when you get it.

This review is from: Smith & Wesson SWFR First Response Knife (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is an awesome knife for anyone. If involved in a car accident you have a seat belt cutter and then if you ever need to break the window it has a glass breaker available to you as well. I love this knife it is durable and effective for everything you ever need around the house.

4.0 out of 5 stars What you see is what you get, May 4, 2010

What you see is what you get; a single locking blade with a seatbelt cutter and a windshield breaker on the other end.

I would suggest attempting to break any window but the front window of a car in emergency situations; as that window is not designed to break but rather to protect you from animal collisions. all other windows should break easy.
