I don't need a tactical pen but just love the look of it!

When you remove the cap, you can screw it on the threaded back so as to not lose it.

This is my 6th tactical pen and the 4th S&W one I own (2 Military & Police and 1 basic 2nd Generation Tactical Pen).

Comfortable to write with as a pen, and as with my previous S&W's the fit and finish are excellent. It is slimmer and shorter than the others, but the striking tip is quite aggressive. An rubber O-ring helps keep the cap in place when used as a stylus. It's thicker than most styluses and will probably not fit in most stylus loops on pads or e-reader cases. Not a big issue for me as I intend to carry it in a shirt pocket, but it might be for some buyers. I really like that I can have a combo stylus/pen when I'm reading (even e-books) as I often take written notes.

I still wish S&W would stop putting their name on the clips, and I'd really like to see a stainless steel version instead of just aluminum, but overall this is a fine product. One minor annoyance as to the construction: The stylus end of the pen that also covers the pen tip is made of either plastic or very thin aluminum. The cap of their Military & Police models is much more solid. A tactical pen should be solid metal, or at the very least use considerably heavier construction. The tip has a lot of air inside which could have been used for thicker walls and sturdier construction (plus a little extra weight). In an emergency there is no telling which end one might strike an assailant with, and my bet is that the stylus end would break on the first solid blow, leaving you with a weapon 20% shorter.

Very nice looking and performing pen. I did replace the ink with the Fisher Space refill because a tough pen deserves a tough ink. A word of advice though, the screw-on ferrule on the stylus tip can easily unscrew itself and get lost. I lost it yesterday at work and would have been very upset if I hadn't found it today. I am going to put a little Locktite on it and hopefully that will help.

i have a whole bunch of Tactical Pens, this is the first i can use as a touchpen as well and eliminates the extra stylus !
great idea, love the design and the very compact size, it even writes good so why only three stars ?
The Touchpen tip is ( in my case ) covered with a thin layer of " i-do-not-excactly-know" what silicon(?) which made the use of the pen very easy, moved over the screen with ease and no scrubbing or hangers !
This layer is gone, not even a week it took, still good for writing but moving from page to page or flipping quick through some pic/ files is tricky as in that the pens hangs on to the screen and doesn`t move smooth anymore !
Would have been perfect otherwise !

I got one of these pens and am impressed with the quality. (Manufacturing Quality Assurance Engineer in aerospace for 25 years). The fit and finish on the pen is outstanding.

The hollow rubber dome on the S&W Pen's Stylus Tip is about the same as the rubber tip on the "Official Kindle Stylus" that I bought for my Kindle Fire from Amazon. I pulled the rubber dome off the S&W stylus tip to check it out (can't help quality testing the goods) and found that it is actually thicker and more robust than the "Official" stylus rubber dome is. (That's judging by feel since I can't remove the rubber from my "official" stylus, I think it's crimped on. Cheaper to make that way you know.)

The S&W was designed to be repairable. I like that.

I suspect that those who experienced the rubber bulb failure were pressing too hard. The old style solid styli, (a-la Palm Pilot and earlier smart phones) required you to slightly deform the layers of the screen with stylus pressure to make the electrical contact. (That's one reason that unprotected screens got so scratched up with use.)

Since these new style capacitive contact tips use electrical capacitance to trigger the screen, they don't require any pressure on the screen to work. I have actually triggered my Kindle's touch screen by holding the stylus "close" to the screen. I believe the hollow nature of the rubber dome is part what generates the capacitance to make it work.

So, when using the rubber end for a stylus tip, touch gently; the stylus and your screen will thank you.

Now, if you must use it in a tactical situation then whang that thing as hard as you need to with your thumb or whatever. The rubber bulb can be replaced easily, wounds or injury from an assailant not so much; and as my Paramedic son-in-law says "We can't fix dead."

Ok, so I've had my pen/stylus for about a year now or over that I guess, anywho, the concept is great and initially I used this stylus a LOT which is why that crappy little rubber stylus didn't last long. No stylus tip means no use so it sat for months and months and months.

I tried contacting S&W who referred me to the company that actually manufactures the pen except they are one of those that don't want customers complaining about their crappy product (in this case the little rubber stylus tip, not the actual pen which is a very good product) so they make contacting anyone unnecessarily difficult. Considering the stylus end was manufactured so that the tip could be easily replaced it just seems ironic.

Someone on here did manage to get ahold of someone who can get replacements to you but here's the pickle...they are charging $6.65 (as of the last I read) for a 3 pack of the same crappy rubber tips. That's not exactly a bargain when you consider how fast these thin little tips tear. So, I went on a mission to find an alternative that actually made sense. Initially I ended up with a headache and nothing but frustration to show for all my research but, finally, EUREKA!!! I found a possible replacement. Not wanting to recommend a product that didn't work I ordered a set first and have been using one of the tips for several weeks now with no problems.

There is a small caveat but when you think about it the difference is more of a better design than a fault. The tips I found are just a little shorter than the originals which means you have to angle your wrist/hand a little from the way you did with the originals. It's no big deal and as a benefit the shorter tip makes it far less apt to tear.
