From the get go, you know it from the feel it's looks like a sharp stylus/pen. The tip whether closed or open looks like it'll get the job done. All I know is, I'd rather not be stabbed by this thing, and it's a very, very, very cost effective alternative to buying a brand name Benchmade tactical pen. The price is right on this one. It's definitely a good alternative to carrying a knife around (which in my state and many others would make a cop question and at the least confiscate it). Good as a gift for the women in the family if they tend to forget the pepper spray, since they could easily remember to always bring a pen to write at work with.

This pen is as heavy-duty as you need. I have a few in different colors. I replaced all my ink pens with gel refills Parker Refill for Retractable Gel Ink Pens, Medium, Black Ink, 2 per Pack (30525PP). You will not be disappointed with this combination.

Tactically, this pen is short and you need to hold it using a ice-pick grip for it to be effective.

Synopsis: I like a wide variety of defensive items on my person while on patrol.
Pros: Nice sharp business end. Sturdy construction. Nicely machined finish. Strong clip. Fits nicely in 5.11 (new style) unifrom shirts.
Cons: Finish a little too smooth for grip. Thumb must be placed on end when striking to keep from slipping grip. Cap does not screw on to end, end should have been threaded as well to hold cap secureley.

This is my second S&W tactical pen, my previous one was a Military & Police.

This pen is lighter than the Military & Police model, and depending on your preferences this could be good or bad. It is slightly thicker but combined with the lighter weight means it is not as sturdy as the M&P model. It is also 1/2" shorter. Some people might prefer the lighter weight, but I have found I prefer the extra length and additional weight.

It still has the prominent "Smith & Wesson" on the clip which IMO reduces the innocuousness and thus the usefulness of a tactical pen, which as a rule stands as a self-defense weapon that can be taken even where one cannot carry weapons.

The barrel of the pen features lengthwise grooves which do nothing to improve the grip and seem intended only to make it look cool. I do like the threaded cap but as there are no threads or even a rubber o-ring to hold the cap on when it is being used as a pen means that sooner or later the barrel will show marks from where the cap is pushed down on it or the cap will get lost.

If I could find some way to merge the best features of the two - the threaded cap of this model and the removal of the M&P's pointless lanyard hole, the more solid construction and additional length of the M&P - Smith & Wesson would have a nearly perfect tactical pen. If they would make it out of stainless steel so it was both heavier and looked less weapon-like that'd be even better.

I give it three stars. I'll keep this one as a backup but for now I'll continue to carry the Military & Police model.

The pen is solid, well-built; weight is adequate, comfortable to carry on pant or shirt pocket; clip secures it firmly to both. In my opinion, only half an inch shorter than optimum length, but this is my opinion, I am sure designers will have a justification (cost or practical) for size. Like it over M&P because the cap of this one screws, and the other clicks in, personal preference, but M&P is longer.

This is the second of these pens i have purchased, the first i simply lost one night when i had it loose in a cargo pocket. So i purchased a new one thru amazon. It was a better price, and faster shipping.
When considering this pen you must realize that this isn't your average pen. It is quite a bit bigger then even your fancy "executive" pens. It also has a screw on cap, and a very sturdy pocket clip.

But this pen is not a quick pen for you average use, like say a click pen. This pen is not intended to be a "quick draw pen" it is however designed to be a quick draw weapon. This is a kubotan, this is why you buy this pen. But it will take a moment to get the cap off to write anything with you, but do not feel upset about this. It is a very important design feature, the screw on cap is very important to its use. It will keep it from coming off in "the heat of the moment".

Another important thing to note with this is that the pocket clip will tear up your pockets just as a knife clip will. But as anyone who is buying this pen is likely to carry a knife when possible anyway you have already comes to terms with this. So, no real harm there. Just another concern.

I would recommend this pen to anyone who wants a little extra.

I carry this pen with me everyday. It's a great pen. Yes, it's heavy and larger than a regular pen, but isn't that what you want in a tactical pen? It makes a fantastic palm stick. The fire starter is a bit tricky, but once you figure it out, you can spark it with every strike (use the sharp edges).

The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that the pen quit working early. I bought a few refills and I was good to go.
