Early in 2010 I wanted the best electric knife sharpener I could find for home use. I had tried several different manual systems, including Lansky and Warthog, but although they did a fine job, they were labor intensive and time consuming. I decided to look for an electric/manual sharpener that would work much faster and keep all my knives razor sharp without the time & effort an all-manual system requires. After extensive online research, I decided on Smith's Diamond Edge Pro Electric Knife & Scissors Sharpener, Model #50023.

Smith's (established 1886) claims that this is the only non-commercial grade knife sharpener with interlocking diamond wheels that is available for home use. I can't confirm this, but I can tell you that it does an excellent and really fast job sharpening knives razor sharp for just a little over $100. (and free shipping from Amazon). There are two electric-powered sharpening wheels that sharpen both sides of the blade at the same time, and also two mannual slots, one with carbide wheels (for rough blade shaping) and a ceramic slot for fine finishing. The powered grinding wheels have two speeds, low and high. There is also a pull-out cylinder for doing scissors manually. The machine is compact (approximately 8" long x 6" deep x 5" high) and lightweight- about 4 pounds. It is very stable when sharpening, with it's rubber feet and low profile. The housing seems to be heavy-duty plastic with chrome accents. The box says it also sharpens serrated knives, but I haven't tested this function yet. It has a 3 year limited warranty.

It was the industrial diamond surfaced grinding wheels that captured my interest originally, and in my opinion they are what puts this sharpener in a league above the others.

The cutting edge obtained from this product is acceptably sharp, and reasonably easy to produce.I would recommend it for use on kitchen knives, but would not use it to sharpen thicker blades. The edge produced is not able to shave hair from my arm,but is good enough for a working edge. The biggest plus is the ease of use, anyone who can pull a blade through it,can sharpen a knife, and keep it that way.The scissors sharpener is a nice feature also, even though you must manually push the scissors through, they are sharp in about 3 or 4 passes.

This Smiths Abrasives sharpener uses two interlocking "sprial" diamond coated cylinders to sharpen blades. I've used it on stainless steel and high-carbon blades with good results The fixed ceramic "triangle" stones are used to apply a final "burnishing" to the blade.

From the reviews and ads for this unit, I was expecting a razor-like edge. The edge quality I'm seeing is far from that sharp.

It seems to do a decent job, but the blade finish is a little "coarse" for my taste. Smiths calls them a "medium" grit, but I'd consider them more on the coarse to medium range. Even with light pressure and very slow movement using the "low" speed setting, my blades have grinding marks and fine "scoring". A finer grit would make for a "smoother edge". There is also some vertical vibration of the blades which indicates that the diamond wheels are not perfectly concentric.

I'm getting decent edges, but not edges that are as polished as well was supplied from the factory.

Possibly as the diamond wheels ware-in, the quality of the edge finish will improve. Smiths does mention that they will lose some of their initial cutting speed as they wear.

The fixed scissors sharpeners are a nice extra, but are not something I really expect to use very often.

The Smith Electic knife only does knives electrically. The sharpener for the scirrors is manual, not electric. I should have read the product description in more detail.

This is an amazing tool. The blades were all extremely sharp when he finished.

We like it so much we bought 3 of them. One for my wife and myself and 2 for gifts.

Again.. a GREAT SHARPENER THAT IS EASY TO USE AND DOES A GREAT JOB.

seems well built; I was let down that the money paid for the item did not have an electric scissor sharpener; it is manual and I already have a manual scissor sharpener from QVC.. Otherwise I guess it does a job; I'm just not very impressed and especially for the price paid..........

I've had this sharpener for about 5 years now. I've had great success with it, oddly enough, with cheap knives (Daily Chef 8" and 10" from Sam's). I can get a fantastic edge on them, albeit one that won't last long. I generally use a combination of the Sam's knives and Victorinox knives. When I absolutely have to have a good edge (thin slicing tomatoes or dicing a raw chuck roast), I reach for the cheap Sam's knives and this sharpener. Now, that edge won't last much past that specific task, but it'll get that particular job done. Sharpening so often, of course, wears the knife out rather rapidly, but it's not a huge deal because they are so cheap.

I have had absolutely no luck sharpening the Victorinox knives with this sharpener. I can't say the cause for sure (I assume some combination of blade thickness, proper angle, and I'm sure some user error to) , but I just haven't been able to in many, many attempts.

All in all, this is a pretty good sharpener depending on the knife, and it makes sense for someone that wants to go the "cheap, thin blade knife, and replace as needed when the knife wears out" route. Be very careful if getting this primarily to sharpen higher end knives.
