This is one of the better handheld sharpeners I've used. It is well made and the varied surfaces allow you to do a lot. It is designed to be safe and is fairly durable. It'll get your knives sharp, but only utility sharp. I was not able to create a shaving sharp edge from a dull blade, even one of higher quality steel.

I originally got this as a portable sharpener I could throw in a bag or in the car if I was going away for a while and thought I might need a touch-up on a blade. However, since then when I was using exclusively water stones and glass stones to sharpen my knives, I have picked up a Spyderco Sharpmaker, which is an awesome sharpener. I'd rather bring the Sharpmaker with me than this any day of the week. Now yes, it's hard to compare the two, but for the money I think you're better off spending a bit more and buying something like the Sharpmaker. That's my personal opinion, and some people might think that a $50 sharpening kit isn't for them, but I highly recommend at least checking it out and seeing if something like that would suit your needs. I am not endorsed by Spyderco, I'm just a huge fan of that product after sharpening all sorts of knives for the better part of fifteen years. It will bring even my cheap-o utility blades to shaving sharp in a matter of minutes. Likewise, you could purchase just the coarse stones for the Sharpmaker, and sharpen your knife freehand, getting it just as sharp if not sharper than this handheld will do for you with a little bit of practice.

Regardless, the Smith's sharpener has it's place and it is pretty good.

A mistake many people will make, and wind up ruining the sharpener, is to try to press harder to sharpen faster or better.

Works great for touching up all of my knives, especially kitchen knives.
It also worked on a pair of old scissors that I was about to through away.
I'm very happy with it.

Well I actually purchased a set of knives from Amazon and yes they were good knives however very dull. So I purchased this sharpener based on such good reviews and my knives now are so razor sharp that I actually cut myself pretty bad last night cooking."yes I am O.K." I have actually loaned this sharpener to my friends and they also loved it. Anyway I would recommend for such a good price.

This is a good sharpener. Just like a model better that has a stand to keep it stable as you pull the knives and scissors through it.

I usually don't like pull trought sharpeners, but I bought this one because it had scissor sharpener. And it came that scissor sharpener is in fact the weakest point. It just doesn't feel easy or aligned with scissor blade. However it does a job although it requires a bit of getting used to (thus 4 stars). Other three sharpeners, carbide, ceramic and steel pull trought are excellent as any other Smith's product, and it is easy to use it and quite safe if you read the instructions. If you are not skilled in using the regular sharpening stone, this is product for you. It is bigger than you can imagine from the picture but this is only a plus. Very good quality build. Recommended.

Pretty good sharpener but the steels DO NOT TOUCH for some reason. If they did it would work much better. It also has carbide and ceramic blades to sharpen blades that are useless. I took a baynonet from the Korean war that would not cut anything. Took about 1 1/2 hrs off and on but now it cuts paper like super easy! It still looks like s*** but it's very, very sharp.
