The Smiths in the beginning, September 26, 2010
I can't believe this joint's only got one lousy review. C'mon lads & dames, lucky lisp & the boys deserve more cred on their first full studio masterpiece. Fresh and original in it's day this record still holds up soundwise. A masterpiece because it says this is our sound, this is our message! We are THE SMITHS! What's recorded here is just a cameo of what is to come. From the open warm-up of " Reel Around The Fountain" to " Pretty Girls Make Graves" there are genuinly deep cuts to boost any mod's 80's alternabrit cred. Oh and don't dare miss " Suffer Little Children", a chilling and sweetly haunting tale of the woeful Moore Murders of Britain. 'Nuff Said!!!

Top quality release of a classic, September 22, 2009
This review is from: The Smiths [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
I've listened to this album countless times, but always on compact disc as it was originally pressed, so it's a real treat to hear a high quality vinyl remaster. The packaging is top notch, with a nice heavy sleeve. The 180g vinyl record is enclosed in an anti-static sleeve and a 100% replica of the original liner notes is also included.
The benefits of the remaster are heard instantly on Reel Around the Fountain and are also a total joy on the lulling strums of "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle". The rest of the album sounds equally brilliant. My system is no audiophile setup, but the improvement in the sound of this record is obvious.
The omission of "This Charming Man" may annoy some, but honestly, it's already been remastered on the last singles comp, was reissued on vinyl as a 12" single in the 90's, and... well, I really wouldn't expect it to be on this UK import since it didn't appear on the UK version of the album. However, if Rhino plans to release these excellent remasters on CD, I'd love to see a complete US version.
