Smithsonian,

This review is from: Smithsonian (1-year) (Magazine)
If you enjoy reading the National Geographic, or enjoy going to museums, or like the Discovery Channel I would recommend subscribing to this magazine. The feature articles in the Smithsonian are enlightening and well researched. The feature articles often take place internationally. Recent articles have whisked me away to Morocco, Egypt, London. I look forward to receiving the Smithsonian every month. Pros - Feature articles are uninterrupted by ads. - International feature articles - Printed on quality paper

It's a great alternative to Nat'l Geographic and Discovery mags!,

I have been a LOOOOOOOOONG time subscriber to National Geographic, and while I do enjoy many of the articles, I do find it to be a bit more tedious and political now than in the past. I began looking for another magazine to supplement my growing list of subscriptions (with the digital age well upon us, magazine prices are the lowest in history - subscribe today!)What I love about Smithsonian magazine is that it takes an educational and sociological standpoint. The articles are well written and very explanatory. I feel as if I am reading small educational and enlightening articles that expand my knowledge about a variety of topics. In my recent issue I read about the possible discovery and attempt to validate Blackbeard's sunken ship. I also read and learned about some of the migratory patterns of African zebras and the concerns that a fence around a national park there would inhibit their ability to find water. Also included was a fun article about Luddites! The article discussing the proposal for a dam in the Amazon was very neutral and covered both sides of the issue: the environmental impact vs. the need for electricity and income to the region (as well as touching on the problem of mining in the area also). My favorite was a short biography of Gauguin. Then a wonderful article about two of the leaders of the Cherokee Nation and their fight to prevent the Trail of Tears tragedy. Finally there was an article about censorship and free speech in Burma (Myanmar) and an article showing an interesting and artistic look at the brain. All of this in one issue!!! Not to mention all of the little extras included. There is a lot of variety in each issue. I read each and every one of the stories and plan on enjoying issues for many months and years to come.

This is a renewal to our current subscription and the first I have done through Amazon. This magazine is so very enjoyable but the price is generally high through Smithsonian. This price is very reasonable and we have received far quicker subscritpion verification than I expected.

I've been a subscriber to the Smithsonian Magazine since college days...1960's. Have always loved the institution and the mag. I was able...during my Army service to visit the museum regularly. I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir during that time. I've become a contributor in recent years and expect to continue while I also continue to look forward to receiving the mag every month. When I've done reading the mag issues I collect them and pass them on to a local senior rehab center in my home town of Long Beach, NY. Keep alive the good principles on which James Smithson made his original bequest. A truly great institution, a jewel in the mall landscape and a national treasure. Hats off and huzzah!

I am totally hooked on Smithsonian. Where else can the "regular" person be introduced to what's happening in science, anthropology, medicine, etc? This magazine is worth every penny.

We get this magazine and I really like it a lot. I find that all the articles are interesting. It's similar to National Geo but it's focussed more on the US. My partner is a scientist and I'm not but we both enjoy the articles. I recommend this for a general audience but also if you like to read about research.

For many years now I've been reading everything online. Low price and famous name has drawn my attention to this magazine. Delivered sooner than it was expected. Great articles. I enjoy reading the paper version of the magazine, being able to read it again if necessary. And I am happy to learn again something more than the private life of the celebrities and how to lose weight. I wish there was less advertising, but I guess, that's how the magazine is funded, so be it.

Smithsonian is one of the premier publications in my house. (I subscribe to scores of magazines, and this ranks with National Geographic as my favorite.)

This is a great magazine. It has consistently strong articles in a variety of fields. It covers everything from conservation biology to history, and I find myself reading almost all of the articles. For those of us in the DC area, it's also nice because many of the articles highlight new exhibits or events. Recommended.

Pleasantly Surprised,

I received this subscription as a gift 2 years ago - I thought the magazine would probably be too intellectual for me, and/or focus on things not really relevant to the current age. However, I was very pleasantly surprised - the articles are interesting, the right length for today's busy person, and often accompanied by beautiful photography. I read more articles from Smithsonian than all my other magazines combined.
