5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate Q&A book about penguins!, February 10, 2010

This review is from: Smithsonian Q & A: Penguins: The Ultimate Question & Answer Book (Paperback)
This is THE definitive book book about penguins! Lloyd Spencer Davis is a well known and well respected penguin researcher, but don't make the mistake of thinking that, because of that, this will read like a dry, scientific journal article. It's anything but. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. In addition to being a renowned scientist, Dr. Davis is an award winning author and, as with his other books, the writing is engaging, intelligent and witty. He presents scientific information in a way that is very entertaining and accessible to both children and adults.

The question and answer format is perfect - the book is broken down into sections; each section is broken down into subjects; and each subject has one or more questions, each of which is answered with a brief paragraph. It's an easily digestible format. For example, in the section titled Chicks, one of the subjects is Hatching; one of the questions in the Hatching section is 'What is esophogeal milk?'. (The brief answer - for those who are curious - is that it's a secretion briefly produced by incubating male Emperor penguins to feed their newborn chick for a few days if the female has not yet returned from sea with a belly full of food.) This is a book that you can read sequentially, or just pick up and leaf through randomly to learn a lot of fun facts about these fascinating seabirds. The text is complemented by a large number of instructive and beautiful photographs of every penguin species.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn more about penguins. As a former Senior Penguin Aquarist at Boston's New England Aquarium, it's a pleasure to come across a penguin book that is so comprehensive and well written. I challenge you to come up with a question about penguins that Lloyd Spencer Davis has not already thought to answer! I have to thank my friend and colleague from the aquarium, Mandy, for giving me this wonderful book as a gift. My dad loved reading it so much during a recent visit that I bought him his own copy to enjoy. I give it two enthusiastic thumbs up!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite penguin book to date, June 6, 2008

This review is from: Smithsonian Q & A: Penguins: The Ultimate Question & Answer Book (Paperback)
This is very well written and entertaining book, full of up-to-date, interesting information about penguins and penguin research. It thoroughly covers each penguin species, as well as providing general information about penguins. Although it is written in a question and answer format, the answers often lead to the next question so that it can be easily read cover to cover like any other book. It also has lots of great colour photos. At the end are some thought-provoking questions - what can we do to help penguins? I would highly recommend this book to any penguin or general nature lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars RAVES FOR SMITHSONIAN Q&A: PENGUINS, February 15, 2011

This review is from: Smithsonian Q & A: Penguins: The Ultimate Question & Answer Book (Paperback)
Being a penguin freak I found that the Smithsonian's Q&A: Penguins (Harper) is a real eye-opener and I learned a lot: most live in sub-freezing climates but some species can comfortably exist in temperate climates, the largest penguin fossil is 5'8" tall but an extant species called the Little Blue or Fairy Penguin is only are only 12-13" tall, they pant like dogs to cool down, some mate for life but others do not, and they possess a special bone that helps them waddle and keep their bodies upright. Lots of great illustrations and color photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything You Wanted to Know about Penguins, December 4, 2013

This review is from: Smithsonian Q & A: Penguins: The Ultimate Question & Answer Book (Paperback)
"Smithsonian Q & A: Penguins: The Ultimate Question & Answer Book" tells you almost everything and anything you could ever want to know about penguins. It also has many excellent photos.

There are other books out there that have better photos but this one is probably the best balance between photos and information. If you already have some good photo books on penguins but are interested in becoming more informed, this is a very good book.
