Book Description

Welcome to Smitten, Vermont.

With the help of four friends, it’s about to become the most romantic town in America.

The proposed closing of the lumber mill comes as unwelcome news for the citizens of Smitten. How will the town survive without its main employer? A close-knit group of women think they’ve got just the plan to save Smitten. They’ll capitalize on its name and turn it into a tourist destination for lovers—complete with sweet shops, a high-end spa, romantic music on the square, and cabins outfitted with fireplaces and hot tubs.

But is this manly town ready for an influx of romantically-minded guests?

Country music sensation Sawyer Smitten, the town’s hometown hero, wants to help by holding his own wedding there on Valentine’s Day. And little Mia’s lavender wreaths hang all over town as a reminder that faith can work miracles. Along the way, four women spearheading the town’s transformation—energetic Natalie, sophisticated Julia, graceful Shelby, and athletic Reese—get in the spirit by reviving their own love lives.

Join best-selling inspirational romance authors (and real-life BFFs) Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt, and Denise Hunter for an inspiring stay at the (soon-to-be) most romantic town on the eastern seaboard.

One visit . . . and you’ll be smitten too.

3.0 out of 5 stars An ok book December 28, 2011
By Aline
Format:Paperback
I was surprised with the reviews I've read so far. And then I thought things over and realized that I am an avid romance reader so my bar is set high, and what I find is that this book is poor plot and character development. The story has potential, but the book trips over itself in a rush to reach the same outcome for the 4 main characters: I've fallen in love with a guy I've known since forever and God has to give me the courage to admit it.

I think that a book, christian or not, should take you on a journey, should let you glimpse into the characters thoughts, should make you feel. If the character eats a horrible cookie, I don't want to be informed of it, I want the description to lead me to the conclusion. If the character melts with a glance, I don't want to be told that, I want the description of the glance to melt me.

Everything happens very fast, all relationships are solved in a turn of the page and the reader is not given so much as a glimpse in to the deeper feelings, struggles and thoughts of the characters. The most this book will give you is something along the lines of "was that hurt she saw in his eyes?", "the pain was deep, he hurt her badly". As I said before, writers should take you to the emotions, feelings and somehow make you feel them too, not simply hand it to you on a platter.

I will say that Reese's story was written better than the others. Denise Hunter elaborated a little more on their feelings, but in the entire book left me lukewarm. This is not a book that will beg you to turn the page because you just have to know what's going to happen. This is not a book that will take you in to the characters head and make you commit to them. It's better than some other christian romances I've read, but it can't hold it's own when compared to great works of romance.

I give it 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just found new favorite authors! December 6, 2011
By LaToya
Format:Paperback
First I just have to say that I absolutely LOVE Denise Hunter, she is one of my favorite authors. I hadn't heard of the other authors but I figured if Denise was a part of the project I wouldn't be too disappointed. And the book did not disappoint me. I read it in one sitting over a few hours.

The story follows four friends, Natalie, Julia, Shelby and Reese, as they work to save their town. The ladies also find love along the way. The book is divided into 4 novellas, one for each character and author. The four stories blend together under the setting of Smitten, VT.

I loved the stories and thing I have found a few new authors to add to my reading collection. The stories of love and faith were beautiful as each women faced her fears as she found love in unexpected places. And the story of a little girls' faith flows though the entire collection.

Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Smitten is a light read- there is little substance. Each story felt like the same plot and same characters with few variations. It all read like an annoyingly saccharine, sappy, low-budget, drawn out Hallmark movie. Each female protagonist felt like a slight reworking of the last- all were very distrusting and stubborn about silly things. In the first story, Natalie can't trust that Carson is the man he claims to be and seems to be just because she heard differently from her sister, who is notorious for being irresponsible and full of lies. Julia is too stubborn and proud to accept help when its offered to her by her crush, Zak, who she feels is only looking out for her because he's friends with her brother. Shelby has been friends with Nick for a long time but both are too stubborn to see the feelings that are obvious to everyone else (this is true for all of these characters). Reese is pretty much the same as Shelby, as Griffen has been her longtime best friend and has been in love with her for years, yet she can't see it.

So if you don't mind predictable stories that have you wanting to bash characters heads together to just see what's right in front of them... then go ahead and read Smitten. These characters all need a dose of sense- to learn to be honest with their feelings and to open their eyes to what is obvious to everyone else. I suppose that could be said for anyone, but it was a particularly annoying lesson to learn here as it is the same theme in each of the four stories. I would have rather read one cohesive story that wove together these characters- in ways that weren't repeats of the matches made before. Reading one after the other like this, especially when the stories are short, they all kind of blend together with not enough to differentiate them.

I would recommend checking this out from the library before you spend the $$ on it... unless you're in the mood for some brainless, sappy fluff to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unique and great read! June 20, 2012
By Melanie
Format:Paperback
Smitten was such a fun and enjoyable read! The four individual stories (Natalie: Birthday Wishes; Julia: Small Town, Big Dreams; Shelby: You've Got a Friend; and Reese: All Along) that made up the book flowed wonderfully together and I loved each one of them.

The characters in Smitten were great - I liked pretty much all of the main characters. While it did take me a few chapters to get completely into the story, once I did, it seemed that as the book progressed, I continued to like the story more and more!

I don't really know which one of the four stories was my favorite (they were all great!), but I especially loved the last one. =) With a great ending, Smitten leaves me very much looking forward to Secretly Smitten which is set to release this December.

I definitely recommend Smitten if you enjoy romance novels - I think it is unique and a great read!

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
