I love this book! Great look at friendship and adventure for the little set. Nicely illustrated and wonderfully expressive characters (not small feat for a sock and a mitten). Good story line that is more fun with every page. Nicely thought out early lessons about diversity and acceptance. Would highly recommend it!

I LOVE Smitten! Smitten is the cutest book that I have come across in along time! This book is sure to become a must have classic children's story. The storyline of a sock and mitten becoming best friends is timeless and the illustrations are adorable. I have read this book to children several times and they love it! After a vote of children and adults-the absolute favorite part of the book is when the sock knits mitten back together! Thank You David Gordon for giving us a new treasured classic!

This book is a keeper. So fresh..what a great idea for a book with a smart ending. A wonderful book to give as a gift. It is a sweet story. My 6 year old enjoyed it and wants to read it again tom. night. The illustrations are right on with the story as well. The librarian in our town said it was one of her favorites.

My daughter is smitten with Smitten,

My four-year-old loves this story of a lost sock and a lonely mitten who become friends. We borrowed it from the library repeatedly before I finally broke down and bought her her own copy. It still gets read at bedtime two to three times a week, two months later, which is quite a compliment, usually she gets bored with any book after a few weeks and it just sits on the shelf.

Book Review: Smitten,
This review is from: Smitten (Hardcover)
Sometimes you come across a book where everything seems to be in place at first glance. Nice illustrations, appealing characters, catchy title. It's the kind of book you would expect kids to be drawn to. Upon reading, however, there's just something missing. "Smitten" is this kind of book. Underneath the cover, "Smitten" suffers a lack of development that puts the breaks on an otherwise solid effort.
Mitten meets Sock by the park after he falls out of his owner's laundry basket. After introductions, the two decide to comb the big city in search of their pairs. Their adventure takes them to the laundromat (where Sock shrinks), and down into the subway (where Mitten unravels). They end up in the yarn store, where Sock finds a way to put his friend back together. In a world of matching pairs, Sock and Mitten agree that they match as well as the best of `em. David Gordon comes to the table with a resumé that would make most folks not show up for the interview. He has written and illustrated a number of books. He's one of the illustrators taking part in the huge "Truck Town" series by Jon Scieszka. In addition to his print portfolio, Mr. Gordon has worked on a who's who of American children's DVD collections. Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Spongebob, the list continues. The digital illustrations for "Smitten" are bright and smooth with a soft quality. If it were possible to paint with modeling clay, this would be the result. He's good. "Smitten" is a book that kids will be anxious to read, which is a good thing. However, the tension in this adventure tale is never quite there. The characters go from one even to the next without making the reader invest in what's happening. That is the downfall in this otherwise pleasant picture book.

The title is the best part of the book, from a librarian's point of view. The good thing about all the parts that don't fit/are left unaddressed is that the kids can hypothesize.

Mittens and socks always come in pairs. I've yet to be able to purchase only one mitten or one sock, even though my dryer has a bad habit of eating only one at a time!
In SMITTEN, a lost mitten atop a fence and a lonely sock dropped from a laundry basket set about on a quest to find their missing partners. When the trampling feet of school children, a trip into a waste basket, two dogs, and a subway train get through with them, neither mitten nor sock are looking or feeling their best. Fortunately, after a trip through the washer and dryer and a visit to a knitting store (and the aid of a helpful how-to book), both mitten and sock are almost as good as new. And each has found the perfect pair -- in one another! This is a truly delightful bedtime story, or a book perfect for a beginning reader. After turning the last page, you can't help but be smitten yourself! Reviewed by: Jennifer Wardrip, aka "The Genius" |
