This review is from: Smoke Gets In Your Eyes (Audio CD)
This part of four CD series of music by Scott Hamilton with the Eddie Higgins Quartet is quite satisfying. "It's Magic", "My Funny Valentine", "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and this one. There is no information about the band or dates, no notes on these Japanese editions.
Hamilton's relaxed, boozey sound is reminiscent of Ben Webster and Stan Getz. Maybe Gene Ammons. Hamilton is the living King of Cool Jazz, with Stan Getz, etc, now gone, and has a deep rich breathy tone not unlike him. All four albums are uniformly worth having; the only difference between them is if you like the tunes. Hamilton and Higgins do a leisurely stroll through standards, there is little new or original here, but so much new "original" jazz is new, but not that memorable...So kick back and luxuriate in his marvellous tone and pleasant swinging arrangements! I like the title track and "Night and Day", but all are of similar quality. Technical quality of the recording is quite high. Three and 1/2 to four stars on my ultra tough grading system for performances representative of many of Scott Hamilton's better albums. |
