Editorial Reviews

"It was time to get back to basics," Brett Dennen says of his fifth record, Smoke and Mirrors. "I wanted to return to the folk & acoustic music I loved when I began writing. I decided to tap into my memories & explore new emotional territory as honestly as I could." Brett's music career began humbly around the Sierra Nevada mountain range to which he would return for inspiration. "Being in the mountains, aside from the inspiration, was so crucial to me because as a kid I used to spend so much time here. And just being there helped me regain that self-confidence. I remembered who I was."

Well, this is the fourth time I've revised this review. I'm a big Brett Dennen fan and have seen him in concert several times now. I've turned numerous friends onto him and his brilliance. I originally gave this release 3 stars but after listening to it more and seeing him in concert recently, I upped the rating to 4 star. After listening to it even more and grasping song meanings, I changed it to 5 stars.

It's not as great as "So Much More" but it's very good. I think there may be some disguised and personal meanings in the lyrics of some of his songs, making the CD especially intriguing. I thought originally that some songs were weak and "bubble gum" in their simplicity. Actually, all the songs are powerful and contain refrains with universal meaning. There are some fantastic lyrics and powerful music, like "Get Out of Your Head," "When we Were Young," and "Who am I?" I'm especially happy that Brett included lyrics in "Don't Mess with Karma" that show his support for gay marriage, questioning long and widely-held religious beliefs and conventions. "True love is the right of every human being. Go 'round using God as a reason... What if all you believe in turned out to be a lie? Love is what we came here for."

The CD, consistent with his earlier releases, has depth of meaning which may not be apparent on first listening. Although some songs include personal relationship themes (the obligatory love songs), the songs always contain socially conscious and universal messages about being human and how we might best live our lives. The lessons are packaged with introspective and personal content.

There is also lots in this album to make you want to jump up and dance. (We should all do so, by all means.) I just think he's a brilliant song writer and singer. Be sure to catch him in concert. Such energy. Such a fresh and powerful perspective on living in the contemporary world.

What's not to like about this album? Nothing. Tune after tune it doesn't dissapoint. My favorites are "When We Were Young" and "Out of My Head". Brett continues to make up-beat music that anyone can enjoy. There's no smoke and mirrors involved in his craft!

Brett Dennen has been a favorite since my brother introduced me to his work a few years ago. I was happy when he told me a couple weeks ago that he had a new album coming out, and upon the first listen, it didn't disappoint! Even my husband, whose musical tastes are pretty much on the polar opposite of mine, stopped to listen and asked who the artist was. There's a great mix of slow and upbeat tempos and the entire album is easy to listen to straight through. I look forward to familiarizing myself with each track!

This album has a few good songs. We have all Brett Dennen's albums. I feel the first two are the best. His later ones are ok, but nothing spectacular. The song Smoke and Mirrors is probably the best on this album.

This is good stuff. The lyrics are fantastic. Very introspective and the melodies, as usual with Brett Dennen, cause uncontrollable foot tapping. You can't help it. So don't even try.

I've been a Brett Dennen fan since I first heard "Ain't no reason" from the "So Much More" album. I loved that album because it was personal, socially conscious, and beautiful. Smoke and Mirrors is a return to form for Dennen. His album dedication is "to those who might have lost their way, but found it again from within." This pretty much sums up the direction of the album.

Musically, Dennen is taking full advantage of his band. While the album still has its acoustic/reflective songs (Only Want You) it also has more upbeat songs like "When We Were Young" that can make a person want to dance and pump their fist along with the chorus (my neighbors probably think I'm crazy because of this song).

The CD packaging is very nice too. It's a cardboard digi-pack done in a matte finish. It's nice to look at and to hold. I'd recommend this album to any Dennen fan and also anyone who enjoys reflective songwriting focused on hopeful side of difficult times.

I LOVE Brett Dennen. I have all of his albums. I have seen him in concert so many times. BUT, this album isn't nearly as good as his first three albums. It is, however, much better than his last album "Loverboy" which was definitely my least favorite. I listened to this album in its entirety, and then I listed to all his old albums and so many of his older songs are far above the ones on this album in terms of talent and heart and soul which is what I love most about Brett Dennen. I am still a fan, but I long for him to continue to produce songs that resemble "She's Mine" or "The One Who Loves You the Most" or "Blessed" or "By & By" or "It Could Make You Cry."

Saw Brett's appearance on Live at Darryl's House about a month ago. Had never seen nor heard of Brett Dennan before and was at first unsure about his somewhat unique vocal style but the music was good and the more I listened to his music the more I liked it. Ultimately decided to buy this album (being on sale for $5 certainly helped). Overall a good effort and I'll likely buy another one of his albums in the future.
