5.0 out of 5 stars Greed does not always pay September 27, 2012

This is the firsts novel I have read by Pamela St Abbs and I will definitely be reading more of the Inspector Campbell mysteries. I found the central character Inspector Campbell to be intriguing with all the hints about his mysterious childhood and past. The actual mystery is well constructed with clues that are subtle and make the reader think. The characters are realistic and not stereotyped. The Norfolk setting is compelling, and the sense of menace that pervades the novel holds the reader's attention from start to finish.
With so much media coverage about developers who become ruthless and corrupt, the very unsavoury murder victim made me think about how easily greed can corrupt a person and nurture that person's evil tendencies. Those who enjoy writers such as PD James or Ruth Rendell, will definitely like this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me June 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ms. St. Abbs' writing style didn't appeal to me, but as I only read a chapter before I tossed it aside, I'd just as soon not comment on plot, construction, or characters so as not to spoil it for someone else. As I said, my only problem was with her style, and different folks enjoy different styles of writing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time March 24, 2013

I had high hopes for this book after reading a review but it is a case of poor writing. It looks as if an eight year old has written it for a school report.Too bad to even finish.Don't waste your time or money on this.

More About the Author

Pamela St Abbs was born in England and lived in Norfolk (UK) for most of her life. But her earliest years were spent in California USA. She is married and has a grown up son and daughter. She now lives in Scotland. The portrait is her own work.

Smoke Shadows is the first book in the Inspector Campbell series inspired by the landscape Pamela grew up with. The second book, Water Weal, grew from working on the Fens with its wide skies and controlled drainage systems. Twisting Tide is the third book in the series and features the Wash with its sand banks and creaks.

Pamela St Abbs and Mary Bale are one writer. The Anglo-Norman crime fiction is written under the name of Mary Bale. This story (Threads of Treason) has been published by Pen and Sword.

Pamela St Abbs has also published on kindle a new book of short stories, which includes an Inspector Campbell mystery: A short Journey to St Abbs. The picture next to my portrait is a painting of St Abbs and features on the cover of the e-book.
