5.0 out of 5 stars If youre a serious firefighter candidate you'll read this book.
This book has helped me immensely in improving my firefighter interview skills. I went from not passing interviews to being hired as a firefighter. The important thing that Chief Lepore does in this book is help people understand the logic and thought processes behind answering interview questions. Anyone can memorize a textbook answer, but once you understand the logic...

2.0 out of 5 stars Unrealistic
I found this book to be very unrealistic. I've been in approximately 6-7 interviews with both chiefs and panels and I didn't hear the questions in this book. This book doesn't give tips on how to train the thought process in an interview, posture, language, enthusiasm, dress, etc... What I have found in my interviews are questions like:

What have you done to...

This book has helped me immensely in improving my firefighter interview skills. I went from not passing interviews to being hired as a firefighter. The important thing that Chief Lepore does in this book is help people understand the logic and thought processes behind answering interview questions. Anyone can memorize a textbook answer, but once you understand the logic behind it you are then able to dynamically answer any question thrown your way and it will be an answer that is from the heart. Thanks Chief Lepore!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Firefighter Candidates, November 23, 2004
I have begun the hiring process with local Fire Departments and I feel very confident with the interviews after studying and reviewing this book. Truly there is no other book out there that provides so much information specifically for Fire Department Oral Interviews.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's okay, August 9, 2005

This book gives a lot of good examples of questions asked in an oral exam. I even heard a few of these questions word-for-word in my last interview. However, after the first 15 or 20 example questions, the book's answers become repetitive.

This book is centered around the "what would you do if..." style of questions. If you saw a fellow firefighter stealing at an overhaul scene, if your captain takes the truck out of district to run a personal errand, etc. It contains no general knowledge examples, such as "explain the difference between a heat detector, smoke detector and CO detector" or "give examples of the types of companies in a standard firehouse and what their duties at an incident are."

Overall, a good book simply because it covers several different types of moral dilemmas firefighters may face. Absolutely worth the money to someone pursuing a career in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, May 26, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Written with an emphasis on conducting yourself in a very professional manner during oral board interviews. While some books may stress the importance of making an impression with unique stories, equally as vital is the ability to talk your way through these interviews without looking like a moron. This book gives examples of how to answer questions and follows them up with good explanations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Got the Job, December 1, 2004
I have read this book twice now and have gotten so much out of it. I have had some of the same questions asked that were right out of the book. I now have a better understanding when answering questions from the interview pannel because I know what they are looking for in my answers. Since I have read this book, I am on 5 diffrent department list in the top 10 and have been offered a job with a larg department in California. If you are serious about getting a job in the fire service I can't recomend this enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great info!!!, November 23, 2004
With out a doubt one of the best tools an aspiring firefighter should have. A great easy to read and understand book about the most over looked part of getting hired by a fire department. The oral interview is the most important part of the hiring process. In this book the author guides you through the interview and helps you understand what fire departments are looking for.

This book is priceless when it comes to improving your oral board scores. This book helps to enlighten future firefighters on what the fire service is about and what you may expect as a rookie. Read it from front to back, and along with practice, it is almost impossible to not improve your oral boards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoke Your Firefighter Interview, January 5, 2006

I give this book a perfect score because of the results it produced. I purchased this book one month before my FIRST interview with the Oakland Fire Department. Six weeks later I was sitting across the table with the Fire Chief. This book can and will prepare any and every candidate for there oral board. Moreover, this book does not give "canned" responses to interview questions, it gives you a framework to think and reason in. This new paradigm will allow you to produce your own answers to score highly on any fire related oral board. Chief Lepore and all his books are assets to all of us hoping to become part of the fire family.

Thank you Chief!!

For a career that a lot of people are trying to get into, this book offers a good background into what to expect not only in an oral interview situation, but in other areas as well. Chief Lepore has been blamed with "giving away" a lot of the "secrets" to landing a job in the fire service: Those "secrets" are now available to you. With oral interviews being the largest hurdle to getting a badge, have this book as your coach!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The ONLY prep book you need!!, March 4, 2006
This book has EXACTLY the information I needed and wanted years ago! This is the ONLY book you really need if you want to understand what it means to be a firefighter ~ or an aspiring firefighter (testing for departments) able to see "the big picture" in regard to the hiring process that is unlike any other career field.

Lepore has done everyone involved in firefighter testing a HUGE favor in enabling prospective fire applicants to know what is expected of them and whether or not they have what it takes to get to the top. A genuinely NICE person, and a credit to the fire service! Thank you for writing this book!
