I reccomend this book to anyone taking written exams for the fire service. It is also a great book for any civil service type job. Even if you already score well on exams, pick this book up and read it. It will boost your score. After all, some cities only take the top so percent. Any advantage you can get is critical. This books goes over practically every type of question you will see on a written exam. Read it first.

This was by far the hardest portion of the testing process for me. I have all the other test prep books, but none of them prepaired me like Chief Lepore's book. This book not only shows you the question and the answer, but it breaks down the process on how to get the answer. This book should be the 1st book you should buy when going toward a career in the fire service. Thanks Chief for all you help!!!

I recently got a copy of Smoke your Firefighter Written Exam and was impressed with all of the information it contained. I've read a few firefighter exam books in the past and was always frustrated with the way you had to flip from the middle to the back of the book to get answers to your questions, often times to find that the answer key was not indexed correctly. This book has the answers right after the questions, so no time is wasted flipping around.
The book covers all subjects found on current fire department tests I've taken and there is really no need to buy two or even three different books to get all the topics covered. As usual, Chief Lepore has written a book that we all can use to get a badge. I highly recommend this book if you want to maximize your written test scores.

I don't understand how this book costs nearly $25. It is outstandingly elementary it just approaches questions and gives fairly limited rationales as well. It's not comprehensive in the least bit. There is absolutely no discussion regarding what to expect, etc. There is however a conversion chart of units in case you'll need to know that one teaspoon is 5mL. Also, mow your lawn because that might prepare you for the mechanical part of the examination. The WRITTEN examination. It's not awful, I'll use it and finish it in probably a week because its also written out in size 18 font. Honestly, don't waste your money here. If you can get it in the library or borrow it and look to Barron's guides. They are very comprehensive in how they prepare you. And for $18 less.

After all of the positive reviews, you would think this book is the greatest test-prep book out there. It's not. I was able to get this at my local library via an inter-library loan, and I am glad that I did. Had I not been given the chance to preview it before purchasing, I probably would have bought the book and sorely missed my $26.
I have most of the other firefighter exam prep books and they are substantially better than the book listed here. The vocab section in this book leaves much to be desired, and most of the math problems deal with the metric system, which I have yet to see on an actual test. In addition, the questions are less than challenging. I'm not sure how the exams are in CA, but where I live they are considerably more challenging than what this book presents. As for the "Great explanations" with each question: lame. They are no different than the explanations in the other books I own, and are in fact less helpful in explaining how to arrive at the correct answer. One other point that I should mention: Notice how all of the positive reviews are from the state of CA? I'm thinking most of them either work for Chief Lepore's department, or they are acquaintances attempting to help him sell books. There's no way that legitimate firefighter candidates who are actively testing would give this 5 stars - they would know better. I'm so thankful for my local library!

I think this book could not have been written any better. I love it, easy reading. The only thing that I would like to see changed is that the answer be at a back page of the book.Instead underneath every question. That is only my opinion.
I love the book.

This Book seemed like it had alot better explanation to answers than other books. It didnt leave me feeling like the explanations were a Because it Is the right answer expalantion. The answers are right there after the questions. I did feel like I went through the book way too fast and I feel like there should be more things to practice on. I dont feel as confident about the vocabulary portion as other sections. How do you even begin with vocabulary anyway except reading the dictionary.
