5.0 out of 5 stars Sick of the radio?
Here's your album. Shut off that blasted FM and their inane lyrics and get down low with Nightmares on Wax. Everyone from your mom to friends will like this CD - at least, that's what happened in my case.

The smooth rhythms and beats will hit someone who hasn't heard trip-hop (sorry G. Evelyn) /acid jazzy stuff before with a big fist to the ear. Listening to the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Electronica Enya!
I liked Enya. When she came along, I was entranced; then, a more sophisticated realization of the world of 'world music' opened up to me and I bid her adieu. The same goes for this disc. Maybe in 1995 it was cool, laid-back listening; now, though, it's just all right...somewhat corny here and there and overall not very engaging for the ear. If your collection is...

The smooth rhythms and beats will hit someone who hasn't heard trip-hop (sorry G. Evelyn) /acid jazzy stuff before with a big fist to the ear. Listening to the samples here on amazon may be okay, but to really get the experience you have to get the album and listen to it completely uninterrupted - once you do, you'll want to do it again, and again, and one more time. It's anytime music, good for doing homework to, washing dishes, or just relaxin'. Absolutely wonderful, I hope more people discover this sort of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars If they play music in heaven it has to be this..., September 5, 2000

I bought this CD in 1995 on the reccomendation of a Rastafarian shop assistant in London. All I can say is thanks.

This is quality dub with a generous topping of bass and lashings of pure melody. Try it out for size, impress your friends and family, educate your house pets and occasionally your neighbours...

Smokers Delight does what many artists have tried and failed to emulate, it captures the essence of chilling out. Yes, it's that simple. I'm so laid back now I can't finish this...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delight for Smokers and Non-Smokers Alike, January 14, 2002

I am a goddess...at least I was proclaimed to be one by the sales clerk at the record store where i bought this CD--without listening to it first!!(Actually it was my third copy...my backup was "borrowed" by a friend who neglected to return it)

I absolutely love this Disc...its one of the few on which i skip no tracks at all, even though track 3 makes me wish i were a pothead so i could enjoy it even more. standout work by G.Evelyn, Firth and collaborators. Standout Tracks include: Nights Interlude (check out the revamp on Carboot Soul as "les nuits"), Dredd Overboard, Pipes Honour, Stars, Cruise, Mission Venice, Rise (and its subsequent reprise) and Gambia via Vagator Beach (excellent percussion).

If you love music, and I don't mean mainstream pop/rock, but contemplative, intellingent, and mind-bending music, you will adore this cd. I have two copies. One for whatever happens to be my cd player at the time, and one stored in my handbag for emergencies. You will not regret buying this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Trip Hop, November 15, 2001

Out of all of Nightmares on the Wax CDs this has to be the best!!! It screams trip hop with the trippy sounds effects and awesome mixes. It totally surpases DJ Kicks and Caboot Soul. Even compared to other trip hop groups like Kruder and Dorfmiester or Massive Attack, Smokers' Delight ranks top in its category. Ever since I have heard this CD, I have bought it and shown it to my friends- after that everyone ran out to buy their own copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah man, you gotta get this......, January 13, 2005
This review is from: Smoker's Delight (Audio CD)
Scenario: I am confronted with an armed robber brandishing a twelve guage who wants to disposess me of all my CDs. The man needs to support and maintain his crack habit. Then, without warning his expression softens and he says, "OK pimpjuice, y'all can keep yo three favorites"....
This album would without a doubt be amongst the three I would salvage. In terms of pure appeal and versitility it is unrivalled in my opinion. Whether you want some smooth background beats for when you have guests for dinner, or to create the mood for that fine young thang you managed to get back to the crib, or even blazing up a blunt with your boys, it's all to be had on this record. I urge you to buy it, you won't regret.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very mellow, i liked it for snoozing to, March 28, 2000
This review is from: Smoker's Delight (Audio CD)
i had first heard music by this group from the WaxTrax Mastermix cd and i thought it would be mostly a funk influenced style of music. i discovered that it was in fact much more jazzy overall. i normally listen to stuff with WAY more punch than this disk, but when in the right mood (when i'm too tired to move) this cd really hits the spot. my favorite tracks were the two "Rise" ones, "Night's Introlude" and "Pipes Honour". most people who are fans of WaxTrax Records musicans will probably find something to like in this, but i'd really recommend this cd to people who like very dreamy electro-jazz hybrids (not acid jazz mind you) or atmospheric type of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top five of all time, January 3, 2006

This review is from: Smoker's Delight (Audio CD)
I will never forget the first time I heard this album (which, by the way, was nearly nine years after it was released). It started with a simple 'Who is this?' followed by a 'wow..' and later a 'holy @#$%'. The powerful baselines and smooth beats can lull me into a trance. I try to sing along even though it sounds rediculous.

When I have any songs from this album playing at my house, people generally inquire about it. It is so far outside the realm of what most people normally hear, I think it is a shock to their system.

I have witnessed this album appeal to people with a wide variety of musical tastes. The entire album is in my top 25 most played songs in iTunes. It really is that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars only 5 stars? ...this album needs another 15!, December 2, 1999
This review is from: Smoker's Delight (Audio CD)
This is it. This is THE album. No artist ever need write new music - whatever this situation: taking a drive, curling up with your honey, laying back with a phatty, doin' the 9-to-5, or just groovin' out, this is the only album you ever need own. G.Evlyn has done what most DJs have only dreamed of doing: he has taken hsi samples and layered them together like a master painter to create sound landscapes that are absolutely perfect. If you buy one album in your LIFE, it had better be this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars there is no hope for aspiring trip hop artists, June 16, 1998

Granted, the mighty G. Evelyn of nighty mares on wax would have my head for calling his music trip hop, but that's what it is. The best grooves this side of whatever direction your cranium may be facing, and to those who make love to Enigma I say this: You may seduce her, but a porn star you will never be lest you serve this album 'top your tray and let the smooth moves wrap your lover up in soul-silk. There is no hope for aspiring trip hop artists, I say, and I include myself, for beyond this all is but cheap regurgitated isaac hays samplets. What I mean is this: All this album amounts to is great, and though the artist would like to be referred to as a hiphop artist, it wouldn't do him justice. Though I might throw a kudo or two in wax trax's direction for picking this album up, warp earns all my affection for releasing something which makes the drive back from work that much more tolerable, and the passing of time whilest the bass reverberates over my earie lobes warm, fuzzy, and juicy like tender roadkill squirrel. Wrap yourself up in lace or cement, either way, smokers' delight is the fog that makes it all worth while.
