Book Description

May 1, 2000
Smokescreen is the gripping tale of a political conspiracy to incapacitate the President of the United States, Clint Walker, who we meet in the opening scene as he is stricken with a torturous headache and is quickly consumed by confusion, memory loss and dementia. He collapses on the floor in convulsions. The Secret Service rushes him to the hospital in a race against death. Caught in the middle of the conspiracy is Eloy Cordova-Santiago, a brilliant young neuroscientist at the National Institutes of Health, whose cutting-edge research in molecular genetics has inadvertently placed his life and the life of the President in mortal danger. From his naive beginnings in Venezuela as an apprentice to the local medicine man to his recognition as a world-class scientific investigator in Washington, Eloy's life is filled with conflict-especially the conflict of his love for two women and the conflict of his Indian-Latino culture with the culture of modern science. But none of his conflicts are as difficult as the conflict of his race against time to save the President and the country from the cynical manipulations of the tobacco industry and other self-serving individuals. Eloy's timely expertise in foiling the conspirators brings the plot to a riveting climax.

A New Kind of Novel

Smokescreen: A Novel of Medical Intrigue is a medical thriller in the tradition of books by Robin Cook, F. Paul Wilson, Michael Palmer, Patrick Lynch, Michael Crichton and Tess Gerritsen. However, many of the works by these authors feature a protagonist who is predictably white (male or female), is an Ivy League graduate with an impeccable academic pedigree, and holds a position at a major hospital.

Some authors, such as Tony Hillerman, with his Navajo Indian protagonists, and Faye Kellerman with her Jewish protagonists, have successfully created novels featuring protagonists from different ethnic backgrounds. What makes these novelists unique is their ability to intertwine a strong story with characters from diverse cultures.

However, Latino protagonists in mysteries and thrillers are very rare. Two writers who are exceptional in this regard and are growing in popularity are Carolina Garcia-Aguilera and Rudolfo Anaya. In the small field of the Latino mystery/thriller (if such a category exists) there are no writers with the scientific or medical background to develop a story where the setting is a research or medical environment and where the science is sound and plausible. In any successful medical thriller, it is crucial that the science is sound. It may not always be 100 percent accurate, but it is at least plausible.

Against this background, Smokescreen: A Novel of Medical Intrigue stands out because it has a Hispanic protagonist who comes from humble beginnings and who becomes successful through hard work, perseverance and providence. The compelling story will appeal to all readers, but especially to the large, emerging market of Latino readers. Latinos are looking for thrillers or mysteries that portray Latinos as bright, articulate scientists, and not just Chicano, low-rider villains. Latino readers want to read about people who come from humble beginnings and become successful through hard work. The protagonist in Smokescreen: A Novel of Medical Intrigue fits that theme. We know the demand for such works is huge as evidenced by the attendance of nearly 50,000 people at the Latino Book and Family Festival this past August-organized by actor Edward James Olmos-demonstrating that this is an emerging but often overlooked market of readers.

In Smokescreen: A Novel of Medical Intrigue, the Latino protagonist is not traditional or clichéd. His conflicts are varied, and include personal conflict associated with cultural transition. The protagonist is an underdog (David) going against the tobacco industry (Goliath). The plot is based on today's headlines, that of the medical community versus the tobacco industry. The twist is timely, a conspiracy to incapacitate the president. The love interest and personal romantic conflicts are present. The hero is an expert. Characters fall in love. The antagonists murder good people. The plot is believable, timely, and all of the parts of the puzzle come together in the climax.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Timeliness of theme, a seductive tingle of insider authenticity and a Latino protagonist are pluses in this debut medical thriller by a biology professor and former expert consultant at the National Institutes of Health, but pedestrian writing blunts its effect. In a promising but overloaded plot, Avila mixes the latest medical breakthroughs related to Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease with the sleazy duplicity of the tobacco industry. In 1978, Dr. Karen Williams, an American biologist doing research on Huntington's disease in South America, is saved from a plane crash on Lake Maracaibo by Eloy C?rdova Santiago, a 15-year-old Venezuelan boy whose father died of the disease. A grateful Karen welcomes Eloy as her assistant. He is an apt pupil who makes important discoveries in the field of neurotoxins while still at university and then uses his father's visa to leave Venezuela and continue his career at the University of Puerto Rico. While there, he falls in love with his mentor's daughter, Maria Rodriguez, but they become estranged after she is raped while he is held at knifepoint. By 1986, Elroy, now renowned, is offered a position at the NIH by Dr. Williams. Maria, who has also pursued a medical career, later turns up in Washington, where she rises to the top and becomes the U.S. surgeon general. With Maria's help, Eloy uncovers a plot by the tobacco industry to overthrow the president. Avila's prose is colorless and plodding, and the narrative is cluttered with pulpy subplots and clich?d characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Medical Thriller, July 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Smokescreen: A Novel of Medical Intrigue (Hardcover)
What a surprise! I don't usually go for medical thrillers, but this story had me hooked from the first page! What I liked most about this novel is that the story is about much more than medicine, it's the story of a young man's journey from humble beginnings to the competitive and sometimes corrupt world of medical research. His story alone was enough to sustain my interest, but the shocking 'second layer' of the story really kept me glued to the book. I was not prepared for the twists and turns the story took and I was truly shocked by the conclusion. After reading this novel you will never look at medical headlines again without wondering about the backstabbing and scandal that may have occured in the name of scientific progress. I highly recommend you take a chance on this terrific novel, you won't be disappointed.

This is an excellent, well written, fast paced novel of intrigue, conspiracy and deception at the highest level of government based around the search for a cure for Alzheimer's.

The protagonist is a likeable fellow who I expect may show up in Avila's subsequent novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smoke Screen, October 16, 2007
By
This review is from: Smokescreen: A Novel of Medical Intrigue (Hardcover)
I loved this book! Sure, the fast action full of unexpected twists followed by imaginative resolutions is why we read books, and Smoke Screen satisfies this craving in a brilliant way. But there is so much more to it; an inquisitive reader will learn quite a bit about molecular biology, politics of NIH and life in different cultures - all smoothly packaged into sparkling prose documenting the amazing growth of the hardly literate Indian boy from Venezuelan jungle rising to become the top scientist at the National Institue of Health in Washington.
Love, fear of "La Migra", murder, science - not a boring day in this man's life, not a dull page in the book. And as a side benefit, I've learnt a few Spanish words that cannot be found in a dictionary. Hope not to have to use them, but if need be ...

I highly recommend this book
