3.0 out of 5 stars Where;s the romance
This is a book about baseball locker rooms in the female leaque, not a lesbian book unless you count two encounters, do Smokey and Mac start dating or develope a relationship or was that just a quickie at the end of the book. I thought they would become lovers but the book does'nt say, everything concerning a romance is left in the air. Just because a book has two or...

START OF BACK COVER TEXT -

Finally, in the pages of a novel - the ringing authenticity of the professional playing field... And the authentic women sports stars who play there.

Jill "Mac" MacDonnell is the MVP of the new Women's Baseball League. A former Olympic hero, she is the aging but splendid outfielder for the first-place Delaware blue Diamonds.

Smokey O'Neill plays first base for the runner-up Boston Colonials. Young, brash, she's given a flippant - and deadly insulting - quote about Mac to a reporter.

The same day the quote is picked up and given nationwide circulation in the press, Smokey is traded. Suddenly she must walk into that rival Delaware locker room - and be part of a team whose players and coach are fiercely protective of their great sister.

And so the war begins. War between Mac and Smokey. War with an ex-lover of Mac's - a magazine reporter out to make use of Smokey to avenge herself on Mac. And overriding everything else, the war to win the division.

It's all here. The talented woman playing at the highest level of sport. The strife and camaraderie of the locker room. The inquisitive press. Life on the road and the groupies who follow these deities of the playing field. The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd.

It's all here, in the novel about sports you've been waiting for. - END OF BACK COVER TEXT

We would all love to see a professional women's sports league. In this early lesbian novel, Celia Cohen brings us just that. It's fun to watch the ups and downs as the relationship between Mac and Smokey develops. An oldie, but a goodie, and one I'd recommend for a weekend read.

Just because a book has two or three lesbians in it doesn't make it a storey about lesbian romance. The last two paragraphs describe the completely.

This is the story of a woman's professional baseball league and two star players who end up on the same team. You have the old pro versus the young pup and sparks fly constantly. If you're a baseball fan and like to read about the interplay among team mates, you'll like this book.
