5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite!, October 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Smokin Java (Audio CD)
Darrell Grant and the other musicians on this album are true jazz masters. The music is a captivating mix of a range of moods-in the spirit of great jazz. An added bonus is the gorgeous 24 page booklet accompanying the CD which presents an original story by Grant (a great storyteller as well) and luscious photos of well known personalites from Portland, OR. Thank you Darrel and Crew for a collection that will stand the test of time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Darrell Grant Does It Again!, October 5, 2001
By
"mj5" (Harrisburg, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Smokin Java (Audio CD)
Why doesn't Darrell Grant get the recognition he so richly deserves? He consistently produces top-notch albums and he works with the finest musicians. But, he doesn't get much airplay, at least on the jazz station out of Syracuse, NY I listen to (which has a pretty good reputation), and his music rarely, if ever, appears even in record stores that have a fairly decent jazz section. It's a mystery, to me anyway.

"Smokin' Java" is the second of Grant's albums I've purchased (the other being "The New Bop"), and he's quickly becoming one of my favorites. Both albums are equally amazing, but "Smokin' Java" has a more traditional feel and is less cerebral than "The New Bop." Plus, it's recorded live (the way jazz should be), which gives it extra vibrance. As with his other albums, this one is a mix of standards and new material from Grant and others. All the tunes and musicians are consistently good, but Joe Locke turns in an outstanding performance on vibes, particularly on his own composition, "Slander."

I highly recommend "Smokin' Java." Based on this CD and "The New Bop," I've ordered Grant's other two CDs ("Black Art" and "Twilight Stories") This guy definitely needs more exposure!
