Great early release,

Very bluesy - slower than his later releases. Hopefully he will come back to this style as he matures and after he's done experimenting with other sounds.

This is a re-issue of Lang's first CD issued on an independent label. So, it is true that this is a high school kid playing the blues, because that's exactly what it is. Judge this CD in its original context - an unknown blues talent cuts his first CD on an indie label that gets noticed by the big labels. This is not where Jonny is at today.

This is not Jonny Lang at his best -- his best is probably mostly available when you see him in person. At very nearly his best on his album Lie to Me, Jonny is backed by absolutely masterful musicians while playing fantastic arrangements. That said, this album of Jonny in his younger days is still better than most of what is coming onto the market these days. Smokin' is enjoyable listening, if nothing else. If you're like me, you'll be happy just to have some new tunes to listen to. If Jonny continues to improve and mature as a blues artist, as I expect he will, anyone who buys this album will be glad to have a piece of his history in the making.

this kid is great. i have several of his cds and they all are great. this kid can sing. i listen to him at work, in the car and on my ipod.
this is good sounds, not hostil or booming. you can hear the words and understand what he sings. he as always has a good band backing him up. i would buy this again should something happen to the cd that i have now.

I recommend this cd to anyone who likes Jonny Lang and his brand of music. This was his first cd and a brilliant entrance into the world of music. The boy is a very talented writer and musician.

This is an awesome CD. Jonny Lang has a great voice and rock the house with the best of them. Lie to Me and Wander This World are great CDs, but I was blown away when I heard Smokin'. You won't be disappointed.

I like this CD even better than "Lie to Me", his excellent "debut" - actually this CD predates "Lie to Me" by 1 year. These first 2 CD's seem to be the only ones that are more the bluesy virtuoso guitarist I keep hearing about. The later 4 albums - I've only listened to on-line snippets of them however - seem to have really pedestrian boring stuff on them without the guitar work I crave. I tend to believe the more critical reviews of his later 4 albums and from those reviews and the on-line snippets, I won't be buying those. I keep hearing how good he is to see live - I've never seen him live, but I plan to and when I do, if he sounds like the on-line clips from the last albums, I'll probably walk out. He needs to go back to the blues.

Jonny rocks the blues as usual. Heard it at a friend's house and had to have it to go w/ my newer Lang cd's.
