Book Description

Russell Corbett was all cowboy and wasn't about to let a lady lasso him! But Dulcie Hughes had him tied up in knots from the moment she nearly collided with his combine. She rode into town with her fancy rental car and city clothes to claim her secret inheritance. And neither tall tale nor handsome rancher would deter her from exposing a years-old cover-up at the Beaumont property. She expected to find answers, not fall in love. But like the threatening thunderhead on the horizon, the truth would come fast and fierce, and there would be no escaping the consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read September 7, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is one of the best mystery books I have read in a long time and I read a lot. The mystery of Laura Beaumont keeps unfolding and Daniels keeps you guessing until the last page. Once I got into the story I couldn't put it down, I had to read it until the end. A great read - highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average with some good thrills March 28, 2011
By booker
Format:Mass Market Paperback
*** 1/2 stars

The Girl: Dulcie Hughes, Chicago photographer. She comes to a pissant town in Montana to collect on a mysterious inheritance and discovers she's a part of a 24-year old murder mystery. She's plucky, but not entirely dumb.

The Guy: Russell Corbett belongs to one of those vast cowboy clans only found in Harlequins. The Corbetts own a ranch and...do something for money, I'm sure. I've just forgotten what it is because I've got "Harlequin Cowboy Clan Brain Scramble" (see My Gripes).

The Setup: Independent of each other, Dulcie and local teacher Jolene Stevens start digging into the mystery of Laura Beaumont's death. Jolene is teaching creative writing to the class in installments, and a extra story gets handed in each day, the story obviously about Beaumont's death told from the POV of the killer. Dulcie has the added mystery of recognizing the yellow curtains on Beaumont's house, as well as the creak of the weathervane. Beaumont's daughter, Angel, supposedly saw the killer, but drowned in a creek a few weeks after the murder. Dulcie wonders if the little girl actually survived and she might be Angel. The townspeople are of no help and actively obstruct the two women trying to get to the bottom of it. Oh, and Russell and Dulcie screw against a wall once after Dulcie nearly has the wits scared out of her by a flaming red herring.

The Good Stuff: There were enough red herrings here to keep me guessing (I like that), and for the longest time I thought I'd hit on the right culprit since two of my favorite mystery series ("Midsomer Murders" and "Inspector Lewis") both had episodes where the murderer was a... Heh. Well, I ended up being wrong here, and was in fact disappointed with the eventual baddie because it became so convoluted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Late Night - Could not put it down! January 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I had read another book by this author Crime Scene At Cardwell Ranch so when I saw the name I knew it was going to excellent story. This is a murder mystery set in rural Montana. Here is the concept Dulcie is Chicago girl who inherits some property in Montana. She finds the run down property that was seals after a murder 20 years ago and starts experiencing Déjà vu. The small down doesn't want to talk about the murder - which adds the potential murders. Murder, romance and excellent writing... off to find more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love these books January 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just love the suspense of all of B.J Daniel's books. She really knows how to keep you turning the pages. I read most of her books during my vacation. I was reading two to three books a day. I could not get enough. I started with her most recent trilogy books, (2013) now I am at the beginning. (2004). I just hope by the time I am finished with them that she has a new group of books out. I also like that is more about the story line then the sex. The way she throws in the love making part is really great. These little towns sure has a lot of secrets and action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one! May 25, 2013

I've read the entire series. BJ Daniels is one of the few five star authors out there. She knows how to write about a cowboy....or cowgirl. Just the right amount of spice and suspense. After each book I couldn't wait to get the next book to find out what was next. I can't say enough about these books. What I can say is.....I need more!!!!!

Author B.J. Daniels spins a contemporary western romantic suspense tale in "Smokin' Six-Shooter". Big city girl Dulcie Hughes never dreamed that she would inherit a Montana ranch property and discover that nothing about her life was true in the way she had always believed. Her "ranch" consists of a dried-up patch of ground and an abandoned old house which was the scene of a gruesome unsolved murder. Tensions in the community are running high as ranch owners are desperate for much-needed rain, and Dulcie's questions set nerves even further on edge. Russell Corbett, one of the local land owners, is intrigued by Dulcie, and she is definitely not immune to his innate courtly cowboy charm. The more Dulcie searches, the more she finds, and soon her safety is as uncertain as her peace of mind. She eventually befriends another newcomer to the area, school teacher Jolene Stevens, who is being given clues to the murder mystery in the form of excerpts from an anonymous short story. Everyone wishes Dulcie would mind her own business, but with her world turned upside down, she has no choice but to try to solve the mystery of why she inherited the long-neglected property. Her growing involvement with Russell is another unexpected complication that leaves Dulcie both happy and hesitant. She doesn't plan to stay in Montana, and she can't imagine Russell enjoying life in the city. As truths are uncovered, will hopeful hearts also be revealed? Will Dulcie's real identity be someone she can live with? "Smokin Six-Shooter" is the fourth book in B.J. Daniels' successful Harlequin Intrigue "Whitehorse Montana, The Corbetts" Series.
