Editorial Reviews

This brand new EP is a collaboration between Anton Newcombe & Icelandic artist Jon Saemundur Audarson. Brian Jonestown Massacre has been somewhat of a musical commune for many respected musicians over the years, a band from the 1990's that has spurned other great bands ever since. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks, The Silver Rockets, The Black Angels, The Ravenettes, The Dilettantes, Ride (to name a few) are all part of this musical family tree. Indeed, this is a band that has witnessed many incarnations, since its inception in San Francisco in 1995. Two-dozen band members later and numerous "ups and downs" (some have been famously sensationalized in the media), the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic-cult-like-collective, is front man Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe. Originally Newcombe was heavily influenced by The Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones combined with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones, but his work in the 2000s has expanded into aesthetic dimensions approximating the UK Shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporating influences from world music, especially Middle Eastern and Brazilian music

5.0 out of 5 stars Anton's still a genius. What else is new?, May 26, 2009

As with The Brian Jonestown Massacre's last EP (just Like Kicking Jesus), this one has two different versions apiece for two different songs, and then closes with another, different song. The first two tracks (one in English, one in Icelandic) are versions of the song "The Serious Matter", which you heard if you were able to see the BJM on their most recent tour. This is a great song; up there with any of Anton's best. Tracks three and four are kind of throwbacks to acid house (with great hand percussion reminiscent of Moroccan rhythms--at least to my ears). The fifth track is great. Super F**ked is about six and a half minutes that I didn't want to end. If you see this E.P. in person, it has those five tracks listed as sides one and two, and then has sides three and four listed with question marks. This may lead some people to assume that there are bonus tracks on here. There aren't.

Also, if you get a chance to get the vinyl version, by all means go for it. It has a second disc that is unplayable, but it has a design etched into it. This is probably going to be a highly sought after collector's item, and something very cool to have.

3.0 out of 5 stars it's BJM, so it's good, November 8, 2009
Ok, two of the tracks in this ep are the same (I actually liked the icelandic version better than the english one). It's cheap enough and the last track is really good in the vein of the last album, not in the 90's BJM -that was a whole other level. But this is good too, I guess.

Great BJM material. I really enjoyed all of it. But, as is often the case with them, it was way too short.
