Review of "The Smoking Gods", April 19, 2011
This review is from: Smoking Gods: Tobacco in Maya Art, History, and Religion (Hardcover)
The Smoking Gods is a review of the role of tobacco and smoking among the ancient Maya Indians of Central America. The book covers tobacco smoking, smoking of other substances, the role of smoking in Maya society, the gods who are associated with smoking, and smoking as portrayed in Maya art. There are lots of examples of each of these categories and analysis of smoking in Maya society, and plenty of pictures of various Maya nobility and Maya dieties engaged in smoking, usually cigars or cigarettes.
This book is not really for beginners but is more for the Maya officianado or students. That said, it is a welcome addition to any library on the Maya Indians. Smoking turns out to have been an important part of Maya society, including their gods, and this book presents a lot of good examples of just how important it was.
As a caveat, this is an older book, and the field of Maya studies has moved on from where things were at when this book was written. However, this is still a valid work that should stand proud in any collection for years to come.
