Book Description

April 25, 2009
Rock Fiction. Brad Wilson's ex-band manager shows up with fifty thousand dollars and an enticing but risky offer-- reunite his 70's rock band and play at a South American ranch for one million apiece. Once there, Brad finds their host to be a sadistic trickster whose dark perversions could cost his band their lives. Smoking Jimi is a wild road story-- a euphoric journey that becomes a desperate race for survival. Author Chad Peery draws from his musician years with bands like Steppenwolf and Bob Welch of Fleetwood Mac to create brilliant music scenes in Smoking Jimi.   His musician's approach to literature brings a refreshing lyrical quality, and makes for an intriguing, interesting read.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

In writing Smoking Jimi, I found inspiration by exploring emotions that we all share no matter what our experience of life:  the joy and freedom of being on the road; the intrigue of fresh adventures; the seduction of easy money; and a pervasive fear of the hungry ghosts of the past.  Of all my works and accomplishments over the years, Smoking Jimi is my favorite.

About the Author

Bassist for John Kay and Steppenwolf, Bob Welch (of Fleetwood Mac), Peter Banks (Yes), nationally recognized radio programmer, photographer, and one-time private investigator. Author of the novels, Stealing Margo and Smoking Jimi.

More About the Author

Chad Peery began his music career at the age of 11 playing in his mother's dance band in Siskiyou County, CA. Drunken cowboys howling at the moon and telling stories were early role models.

The glory days in Los Angeles: 70's and 80's, played bass guitar with John Kay & Steppenwolf, Bob Welch (Fleetwood Mac), Peter Banks (Yes), Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and many others. Appeared in stadiums and arenas with Foreigner, Starship, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Miller, Eddie Money, Cars, etc. High point: played with Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood at Cal Jam II before 300,000 people. Low point: The siege of Thessaloniki, Greece, 1981. We didn't start the trouble, honest.

Mid-80s: Desiring to put down roots, turned to radio broadcasting. Air talent and programmer in Southern Oregon, Southern California, Tampa, Raleigh, Miami, West Palm Beach, West Virginia, and Chico CA.

Began writing fiction in 1990, publishing several short stories and two novels. Studied in John DuFresne's workshop at University of Miami.

Currently lives in the Chico CA area, where Chad oversees programming of four radio stations. Prolific writer and photographer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!, May 15, 2009

I don't give out many five-star ratings, but this book is truly a gem. First of all, the author played bass with Steppenwolf, a band I have loved since I was 9 years old (and still listen to). This gave an incredible authenticity to the main character, a "has been" musician in 1999 who had been "almost famous" in the early seventies. There was a "jam scene" in this book that took me back YEARS and invoked the incredible and almost indescribable feeling of playing in a band and discovering the magic that comes with creative spontaneity. Aside from all that, the writing here was first-rate...very professional. The plot was clever and unpredictable, full of both wit and suspense, and always kept my interest. I'm looking forward to reading Chad Peery's other "Rock Fiction" book "Stealing Margo" soon.
