Grade 6-12-- Honest, clearly written, and accurate looks at the subjects at hand. Smoking begins with a history of tobacco usage and then covers smoking trends, economic effects, smoking laws, related diseases, and advice on how to quit. Arkava and Russell's Coping with Smoking (Rosen, 1984) contains some similar material and gives more tips on dealing with smokers and kicking the habit, but is somewhat dated. AIDS carefully defines the disease, describes means of transmission and the affects on the body, explains methods of testing and treatment, relates personal experiences in coping with the disease, outlines preventive measures, and forecasts prospects in fighting AIDS in this decade. Similar in content to Hyde and Forsyth's AIDS: What Does It Mean to You (Walker, 1990) and Nourse's AIDS (Watts, 1989), this text is easier to read and more interesting for general information without missing any vital points. Both books have places to contact for more information and pertinent lists of suggested reading. Black-and-white photographs and other illustrations are of good quality and thoughtfully placed to promote understanding. Two informative and up-to-date overviews. --Diane P.
