Grade 6-10 The rearrangement of chapters in this revised edition emphasizes the dangers of smoking. The material covers history and the medical diseases caused and aggravated by smoking. The straightforward text is the same as the in 1977 edition except for updated statistics, two paragraphs about smoking and the law, more definite information about passive smoking, and a bibliography. New black-and-white illustrations; fewer diagrams, which are more compact; smaller print; and a simplified index complete the new look, but don't make it easier to read or use. Brian R. Ward's Smoking and Health (Watts, 1986) presents the same material in less detail plus offers a discussion of economic implications and social and moral problems. Sonnett explains the physical effects and diseases more completely than Jack Henningfield in Nicotine: an Old Fashioned Addiction (Chelsea House, 1985), but does not cover the other aspects of addiction as well. This book will supplement the other titles that are often needed for middle school reports. Martha Gordon, South Salem Library, N.Y.
