Editorial Reviews

Finally a CD package that does justice to the influential career of singer/songwriter, Brook Benton. Featuring his first five albums on 2CDs, three of these albums are making their CD debut making this the most comprehensive package of Benton's recordings ever released. Features such classic solo hits as "Kiddio", "It's Just A Matter Of Time", "Endlessly", "Fools Rush In" and all duet hits and recordings with Dinah Washington. Along with his hits, there are sublime renditions of several classics from The Great American Songbook all delivered with that silky smooth baritone voice. Top all this off with fully detailed liner notes covering his entire career and your left with another 'must have' from Jasmine!

This double album is made up of three complete and two partial Mercury LPs from the late 50s/early 60s. The first CD comprises "It's Just a Matter of Time" and "Endlessly" the title tracks of both of which were chart hits in 1959. The tracklisting is misleading insofar as the final two tracks, namely "Moonlight in Vermont" and "It's Been a Long, Long Time" are listed under the "Endlessly" album, although they started the "Songs I Love to Sing" album, the rest of which begins the second CD. "The Two of Us" paired Brook Benton with Dinah Washington, who duetted on four tracks and contributed four solos apiece in addition. Dinah's solos have been omitted, as have the title tracks from the first CD, which reappeared originally on the album "Golden Hits of Brook Benton", which concludes this reissue.

The timbre of Brook Benton's voice was very similar to that of Nat King Cole, but there were subtle differences in their delivery, because Nat had a jazz background whereas Brook had sung in a gospel choir. Brook's style was generally softer, and the balance between his vocals and the orchestral accompaniment is therefore more critical than would be the case with a more forte delivery. On "It's Just a Matter of Time" most of the arrangements have been tailored to featherbed his vocal line, and that collection is beautifully rounded out with his hit single.

Sadly, the arrangements on "Endlessly" by Fred Norman, who also conducted, seem designed to smother Brook's vocals rather than enhance them ("Blue Skies" is a good example), and the end result sounds overblown.

While the music is timeless - the original source material for this CD set is very patchy and poor - screeching strings, muddy vocals, superficial bass etc. Pity that Hip-O or Ace have not done a proper set on Brook Benton - this is a waste of money purely from a technical standpoint - CDs are made in Czechoslovakia.
Update - because of my disappointment with these CDs I got the EU Spectrum/Universal reissue "For my Baby" CD - WOW! what a pleasure to listen - strings and bass there underlining how good the Mercury studios were. Jasmine is a mediocre reissue label.

I am amazed at the wealth of material available here. There are recordings here that go back to the late 50's, many that I never heard before. The remastering quality could have been a little better, maybe processed at 24 bit or something but the most outstanding thing about these recordings is that all tracks are STEREO except for one song. The sound is very good. Another great thing is that this cd set of 2 cd's contains 5 complete albums. The liner notes are concise, informative and printed with large letters so that people like me with poor vision can read them. I now own both Brook Benton cd sets on Jasmine label, "Silky Smooth Tones" and "Let Me Sing And I'm Happy". Jasmine has made available for the first time on cd the nearly complete Brook Benton catalog for Mercury Records. This is a beautiful thing. 1 million stars.

What a deal! More than 50 songs on these 2 CD's, and every track was really good. I think his version of "They Can't Take That Away From Me" is the best I've ever heard. He sounds like Nat King Cole on "The Nearness of You," and that's quite a compliment. If you enjoy the standards performed really well with a good orchestra, this CD is a must have.
