This review is from: Smooth Smooth Jackson (Audio CD)
This CD collects material from a period in Chuck's career that I'm not as fond of as his earlier and more recent stuff.
His vocals are in fine form, but the production ranges from solid to rather horrible, especially on the re-recordings of his big hits like "Any Day Now" which never should have put on record, let alone be re-released here. However, a previously unreleased track on the CD keeps me putting it into my machine: An early cover of Jennifer Holiday's show stopper "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" performed as a duet with a young singer referred to as Angie B of the Sequence - who would become a huge star of the Nu Classic Soul scene under the name Angie Stone and continues to rock the charts today. The vocals on this track are nothing short of breathtaking, as Chuck's operatic stylings fit the song's drama very well. A nice surprise on an otherwise forgettable CD. If you are not familiar with Chuck, get the re-releases of his old Brill Building material on the 2 albums on 1 CD packages instead. And give his most recent CD a listen, too, the duet with Dionne Warwick should have been a hit. If you're a fan already, try this CD for the Angie Stone duet. |
