5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable story
I bought this at the library sale. It is so adorable that I'll be looking for more of his childrens' stories. A very sweet tale; my 3 and 4 year old boys loved it! And very nicely illustrated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tale of a lost Lamb
In James Herriot's story Smudge, the little Lost Lamb, there is a lot of action. I found it easy to relate to the little lamb. He is such a cute character. I really cared about what happened to him. I do think the author needed to spend more time on Smudge and his relationship with his mother, sister and the little boy who owned him. I think this would be a great story...

3.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING, April 15, 2000

If you're a fan of the other illustrated James Herriot books, (Bonny's Big Day, Only One Woof, The Christmas Day Kitten, etc.) you'll be disappointed in this one. Rather than being another true tale from his days as a veterinarian, this is just a mediocre, fabricated story about a lost lamb which really doesn't fit with the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Favorite, May 7, 2008
I grew up with the James Herriot children's books, and loved "Smudge" the best! I am studying to be an elementary school teacher, and currently writing a lesson based upon his books. Highly reccomended for children who love animals, and great as parent/child read-alouds!
