Editorial Reviews

Doug Benson is embarking on a grand social experiment: a double album containing two shows, recorded on the same night. The first one performed sober. The second one- high on weed. Which will prevail as funnier?

5.0 out of 5 stars Doug Loves Movies fans should love this. July 5, 2012
By Delos

"This is really teaching me a's teaching me I might as well be high."

If you've been previously misinformed, I can promise you that Doug Benson's comedy isn't just for stoners.

The cooked/uncooked format of this (getting to hear the set twice) was genius. I listen to many podcasts because what I like about comedy or comedians has evolved over the years. Rather than just seeing the polished set that airs on TV, I prefer to hear my favorite comedians riffing, doing extemporaneous bits, working/controlling the crowd. I like that 'behind the scenes' feel of getting to hear how they actually they work out their sets - and the unique format of this album is a great exposure to that.

There's some imagery (and terms) that will stay with me forever, and always make me smile when I think of it.

Turban Cowboy

I don't want to list more, I don't want to spoil any punchlines, but I could go on and on.

4.0 out of 5 stars A "Yes!" With A "But..." July 17, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
First, the good: This album is nearly two hours long, and the current price (four smackeroos) is so low that it's obscene. Doug Benson, if you haven't heard of him, is a solid performer who has a ton of comedy hours under his belt, not to mention podcasts, movies, and shows. This album is also the result of a creative experiment. A die-hard stoner, Doug wanted to see how being high affected his sets, so he performed this album twice in a row. For the first crowd, he was sober (uncooked), and for the second, he was as high as he could get himself (cooked). Although each set is essentially the same jokes, it is fun to see how they change -- in big and small ways -- both by Doug's mental state and the crowd participation that he engages in. If you're even kind of considering this album, or if you're just browsing for some new comedy, there is really no reason at all for you to skip this one. Even if you hate it, hey, there goes four bucks. You can't buy a cup of coffee for that much in some places, let alone two hours of inventive comedy.

Now, the bad: I admire Doug for a lot of things, but mostly for his work ethic. The guy might be a stoner, but he's far more prolific than your average comedian. He puts out a new album every year like clockwork, he hosts a podcast about movies on a (more or less) weekly basis. He's already created and produced two movies (and is working on a third). And he's had a few shows appear here and there (most notably The Benson Interruption, which is sort of the MST3K of stand-up comedy). He's the best argument against weed turning you into a do-nothing slacker.

Unfortunately, this also means he's getting a little overextended. Some comedians only release an album when they've got a full set's worth of A-grade material.

I'm a big fan of his albums. Two sets to compare and contrast for diehard fans. Four more words required.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stoner Humor and lots of content July 7, 2013
By Jose
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Doug Benson is a very witty comedian for a self proclaimed "pot head." A lot of the humor revolves around smoking pot, internet musings, and the entertainment business. The interesting thing about this particular CD is the amount of content provided; Benson provides two performances, an 'uncooked' and 'cooked' version of each joke (the versions refer to Benson's current state of mind during his two performances). If you like the comedic process, it is interesting to see the evolution of a joke, the polish added by the comedian, and the general atmosphere from crowd participation. I really enjoy comedy and love to see why some jokes work better than others. I knocked the rating down to 4 stars because I personally hate when comedians use twitter, facebook, or phones on stage/during their acts. Benson's jokes are very silly and jovial, but also very blue; be warned. I liked Doug Benson's previous CDs more, but if you're a fan, this is a must have for your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny album March 17, 2013

I loved the concept for this album. Providing two performances of the same material with one while high and one sober was a very cool idea.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could have done without it being a double album
Really funny and two hours long so a good value but since it's two shows back to back with 95% of the same material, it was kinda redundant.
