learn to read, y'all!, January 24, 2005
This review is from: Smythe Sewn Faux Old Leather Wraps, Saddleworn, Lined (Hardcover)
That is, those of you who thought this was leather. The ad clearly stated that it wasn't. But then, I dunno why I expect people to actually be able to READ!!!
I love this journal. There are several things about it that get me going. One is the pouch (yes, it's there; it's in the back, behind the pages you write on). I have already put several paper items in there so that I won't lose them as I journal. It's a very basic pouch, but it does the job.
The other thing is that it is only faintly ruled. The lines aren't dark and annoying. Rather, they are there enough to give you guidance in writing straight across the page but when you're done writing, it looks like you just wrote perfectly with nothing to guide you. I love that!
I also like that the pages lie flat when I open it. It's not a spiral journal, but it comes close to being that easy to make the pages settle down.
Finally, I like the magnetic flap. It allows me to keep the journal closed without a snap or zipper or other less elegant type of closure.
I highly recommend this journal!

Better than expected, January 21, 2005
This review is from: Smythe Sewn Faux Old Leather Wraps, Saddleworn, Lined (Hardcover)
I had originally given this book a pass, after reading the grumpy reviews about the faux-leather covers. But I saw these journals today in a local bookstore and I bought one immediately.
The paper used for the body of the book is lovely: very good quality, thick, smooth, ink-friendly. It's great for those of us who write with fountain pens. The binding lies nicely flat as you write, so you don't have to keep the pages squashed open with one hand. The thick, contrasting endpapers are a nice touch, as are the colored ribbon bookmark and back pocket. And I love the magnetic closure!
Overall, this is quite a good quality blank book for writing. The only thing I dislike is the faux-leather cover. It's not -awful-, but compared to the quality of the rest of the piece it's kind of like a cheap joke. Plain or simply printed wrappers would have been a more honest solution.
