From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2. Snail sets off a chain of negative comments when he tells Pig that she is fat. At first Pig ignores the remark, but the more she thinks about it, the worse she feels. When she meets Rabbit, she tells him he is timid. Before long, Dog is called lazy, Spider is ugly, Goose is silly, and Snail is slow. The animals take the insults in stride, but then the seeds of doubt begin to work and insecurity sets in. The character flaws begin to nag their owners, making them miserable until this cumulative tale is complete: Snail has a change of attitude and begins a string of apologies. That night all sleep contentedly. This enjoyable tale can be easily transferred to human concerns. Von Roehl's pastels, in muted tones, do a fine job of complementing the day's events and interjecting humor. Also fun for reading alone, this book cries to be read aloud at storytimes.?Marsha McGrath, Clearwater Public Library, FL

Review
Sticks and stones will break your bones, and names will sometimes hurt you! Snail Started It! is a charming circular story that demonstrates how unkind words can damage self-esteem and kind ones restore it. It all starts when Snail calls Pig fat. Snail's remarks upset Pig, so much so that when she meets Rabbit, she insults him. He in turn insults Dog; Dog insults Spider; Spider insults Goose; and (coming full circle) Goose insults Snail. Since Snail started it all, it's up to him to set things right, initiating a similar cycle of apologies. Snail Started It! is wonderfully written for young readers ages 5 to 8. Angela von Roehl's charming artwork perfectly illustrates this engaging story. --
