Editorial Reviews

Start your engines for the incredible true story of the greatest rivalry in drag racing history: Don The Snake Prudhomme (Jesse Williams of Grey's Anatomy) versus his longtime friend and nemesis Tom The Mongoose McEwen (Richard Blake of DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION). From the fiery days of early speedways through the explosive peak of their popularity, these are the personal triumphs and tragedies behind the legendary races and Hot Wheels partnership that created a global phenomenon. Ashley Hinshaw (CHRONICLE), Kim Shaw (SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE), Fred Dryer (Hunter), Ian Ziering (SHARKNADO), Tim Blake Nelson (O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?) and Noah Wyle (ER) co-star in this nitro-burning drama of the two men who battled business and each other to change motorsports forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome story burdened by the facts March 5, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
This is a great movie. The subject will actually probably limit it's audience for decades. The stories told are real, diverse and 3 dimensional and for the amount of time needed to tell them, the limits of screen time, were well exercised.

As a drag racing fan, it is probably the best piece of cinema ever devoted to any part of the subject, as is 'Heart Like a Wheel'

The acting was never questionable and the screenplay was streamlined and able to deliver 40 years of racing history, two careers in depth and two completely different social lives in one pleasant sitting.

Great film, make sure to remind your non racing friend about the advances to everyone's vehicles due to guys like these.

Great film, period correct, no glaring Hollywood errors.

5.0 out of 5 stars this needs a real review March 15, 2014
Format:Blu-ray
why is this "real"? Because I am a casual observer not an NHRA fan, and after reading other reviews I think a straight forward review is lacking and this film deserves one. My only history is I had the Hot Wheels. For reference I will use Rush, another race film.
This movie has lots of vintage footage, which I like- compare to the kind of bluish hue in Rush. I'll tell you what I thought- I absolutely loved it. What an enjoyable time spent watching it. The human drama here is different from Rush but no less compelling. I thought the casting was ideal; the acting was great all around; I enjoyed all the vintage footage, and I really liked getting to know the men behind the names, their personal stories and struggles. This IS NOT, let me be clear, a movie for race fans. This is just a great movie. If you are a race fan you will especially love it, but this movie stands as it is, on it's own as a story that is worth telling. This would be a great date night or family movie- movies like this are why we invented popcorn. I admit I didn't have high expectations going in- boy was I ever wrong. It is so refreshing to have a compelling movie like this that is such that you can just sit back and let it transport you into a great story; unlike Rush, this isn't really about losing or winning- when you see it you will realize it is about something more important in people. I cannot believe how much I enjoyed it. .

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Lived It, You Will Love It. March 15, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
I could almost smell the nitro, see the smoky burn-outs that left tar freckles on my face! Totally loved this movie as I remember meeting both of these guys, Don Garlits, Raymond Beadle, Roland Leong and many of the greats that worked their butts off in the pits getting ready to race, I smiled throughout most of this movie because of the accuracy of so much drag racing history. My husband and I lived it and loved it when we were doing it...little tip for the ladies, greasing up by my hands being in the engine made my hands soft.

Completely enjoyed the movie and have already watched it several times. The sights and sounds are great - I suggest that the volume be turned WAY UP.

This is a must own for the gear heads, speed freaks, race fanatics and automotive history buffs. It gives a good history of drag racing and the impact that the players had on the sport.

It chronicles the impact of the supporters and sponsors and their contribution to the sport of drag racing.

"What you have in your office right here is the biggest draw in racing." In the 1970's the NHRA drag racing circuit was just starting to grow. The two biggest stars Don "The Snake" Proudhomme (Williams) and Tom "Mongoose" McEwen decide to join together and form a partnership. This partnership leads to a sponsorship with Hot Wheels as well as taking the sport to new heights. But like most things the rivalry on the track leads to tension off. I have stated before that I am not a big car racing fan, real life or movies. I wasn't a fan of Days of Thunder but I did think Rush was OK. This one is more along the lines of Rush. This one deals with the off the track aspect rather then the actual on track racing. The acting is OK but the thing that really helps the movie is the fact that it used actual race footage during the scenes, rather then the cheesy recreations most often used. Again though racing fans will really like this, but for people like me, I thought it was OK but nothing I'd watch again. Overall, better then I expected and the fact that real footage was used really made the movie that much better. I give this a B.
