Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Those who followed the treacherous, sidewinding course of the Snake were carried to some of the most beautiful country on earth: the untouched Pacific Northwest. Flare O'Flaherty--son of Ireland, mountain trapper, and gambler--agrees to lead a group of missionaries downriver to the remote headquarters of the mighty Hudson's Bay Company. Along the way he faces the greatest challenges of a wandering man's lifetime in the form of Margaret Jewell, a beautiful, strong-willed teacher of Indian children, and a young Shoshone, Sima, seeking the white father he never knew. Together they would find their destiny along the mighty river that bore the shape of a serpent and held the promise of home. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

I came out of Missouri and Arkansas, of Irish, Welsh, and Cherokee heritage. After a whirlwind of colleges and jobs, I discovered that books are my calling, and I've written more than twenty, primarily about mountain men and Indian people. Though awards are less important than readers, I'm glad when they come, and was delighted to be named Writer of the Year in 2003 by Wordcraft Circle of Native writers.

I live with my wife Meredith, the novelist, in a remote corner of the canyonlands of Utah.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dumbest story I've ever read, June 13, 1997
By A Customer
This book rates a "1" because .2 was not an option on Amazon's scale. The book's title is a misnomer leading to great disappointment for anyone hoping to read about the Snake River. Billed as "historical novel," these words rely on name dropping of only two historical figures as very minor characters in this story. Missing a great opportunity to tell of dangers and adventures (geographic, social and political) faced by pioneers traversing the Oregon Trail, the author studiously avoided anything exciting and/or intellectual. Stuffed with comic-book cliches, and romances with predictable misunderstandings and resolutions the reader is caused to discard this writing as the work of a frustrated student of English 101 who prays the prof. will at least count the number of words as worthy of a "C". This is a real page-burner.
