Chief Schabuttie Gilliame - Snakes Crawls At Night
Holy cow, what a delight this one is. I know nothing about this artist other than what is in the liner notes but what is written is that he was born in Egypt, spent time in Arkansas and Louisiana and has relocated to the Phoenix area since 1980. Born in 1925, he was about 76 when this CD was recorded in 2000 - 2002.
So what about the music? Well it is a ton of fun to listen to this one. Mr. Gilliame handles all the vocals and wrote all 10 tunes. His voice is similar to Howling Wolf and he loves to get in a groove and really work it as far as it can go. The songs are also similar to a Wolf style with some nice shuffles but there is some variety as well. The crew of musicians is outstanding. Recorded over 4 sessions with different players, the list is too numerous to mention but this was produced by Bob Corritore who plays harp on 6 tracks and also features Kirk Fletcher, Kid Ramos, Rusty Zinn, Junior Watson and Louisiana Red on guitars. Every track sparkles with fine playing and the set closes with Lowdown Dirty Shame which features some sweet sax from Baron Shul. The subject matter we have here is big legged women, snakes crawling at night, cheating women and a few fine ones as well - just what you expect from a good blues set. If the tune Willie Brown Blues doesn't put a smile on your face, please check with your doctor as you need some help.
Summary - great songs, vocals and instrumentation. First rate modern electric blues. Highly recommended. This man needs to get in the studio again ASAP if he is able at the age of 85!
