As soon as you start the game, you know that Snake's Revenge is a very different Metal Gear game. For one, you start off the game with a Beretta and a knife as opposed to your bare fists. For the first few minutes of the game, you'll be walking around the forest, dodging spot lights and strange flying craft. The storyline in this game is not as strong as in the first one. Also, the atmosphere in Metal Gear was so much more drab and menacing, wheras Snake's Revenge is full of bright corridors and sunny outdoor environments. This time around, it seems that the developers were more concerned about variety than game-quality. There's a train, a desert fortress, a bridge, a jungle, and many other locales. The newest addition to this game, though, is the use of a side view. The side view can be interesting at times, but I overall wish they had left it out. But to me, the most frustrating part is the end. After defeating the ending boss, you go out a door and arrive at door number 1, door number 2, and door number 3. I've played this game for hours and hours on end and I could NEVER figure out how to open them. Weapons didn't work, or even security cards. But in addition to that, you can backtrack through most of the game. Overall, Snake's Revenge is a good game for the NES, but it just didn't capture me the way Metal Gear did.

Hideo Kojima said it best, this game stays true to the Metal Gear concept. That it does, this game is fun (albeit super difficult) and requires a mastery of stealth. This game addressed many of the problems with the first NES incarnation of Metal Gear (now guards wont be looking right at you when you enter a screen!) Every Metal Gear fan I have ever talked to said they disliked this game because it was "unofficial" but let me clear this up, to start when they (Konami) made this game Kojima had no plans of doing a sequel to Metal Gear, and when he learned of the production of this game he created his own sequel to the original, so this game is responsible for the ENTIRE Metal Gear franchise (minus the original of course). And of course the complaint that it is non-cannon, well, neither is Metal Gear: Ghost Babble, Metal Gear Solid Ac!d, Metal Gear Sol!d Acid 2, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops +, or Metal Gear Solid Mobile but those games don't get the same "non-cannon" beating that this title does. To conclude, this game is fun, just leave it at that, heck, pretend it's not even a Metal Gear game if that's what floats your boat, just please, recognise it as a great game because that's what it is.

This is by far the most difficult of all the Metal Gear games. Playing through on my own, I was never able to get past the first major boss (a bunch of guys who get into a football stance and rush you). I'm not proud to admit that I could only get past this game with the Game Genie. It is one of the few games that I had to cheat to win. This is also the red-headed step child of the Metal Gear series. When Metal Gear Solid was released on the PSX, it referred to the game with the Zanzibar mission as Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. This confused me because Snake's Revenge for the NES was the Zanzibar mission. Apparently, there is an unreleased (in America) Metal Gear 2, but we got Snake's Revenge. They aren't the same game, but at the same time.....the mission is the same. I don't fully understand this.

Much like in the first Metal Gear, Solid Snake begins in a jungle and must infiltrate a base. The play control is similar to the first Metal Gear game, but for some reason it isn't as fun. The difficulty was ramped up very early in the game, and as it seems that the makers of Metal Gear have almost disavowed the existence of this game....this is a very forgettable game. Not very good, but if you must play every Metal Gear game in existence, don't forget about this one.
