4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Voodoo / Hoodoo Introduction & Application
This is a fascinating introduction to Voodoo / Hoodoo, with practical application of various techniques--spells, curses, folk magick--for anyone interested in the subject.

This book provides a very subtle, yet exciting introduction to Southern style Voodoo / Hoodoo (not the Religion of "Voodou").

I can't say this book is great, as I don't know much about voodoo... however it was comical if anything. You can tell the book isn't supposed to be too serious... it is quite short and I think it's more for laughs, especially since it comes with a cheap, mass-produced, voodoo doll.

However, I did find it to be entertaining and perhaps some of the things in...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Voodoo / Hoodoo Introduction & Application, April 18, 2003
This review is from: Dr. Snake's Voodoo Spellbook (Hardcover)

I read this book in one sitting, and could not put it down. This small coffee-table style book is packed with short spells and stories that explain the subject in a very concise and entertaining manner. At-first, it seems like the book & voodoo doll is a quaint gift set, but the feel of the book and the writings within are inspiring and conducive to comprehending a general overview of Southern Voodoo / Hoodoo.

New Orleans style Voodoo is the foundation of the book and it contains a brief introduction to many aspects of Voodoo / Hoodoo.

Aside from the great Spells, I particularly enjoyed the section about reading Playing Cards as Tarot cards. Historically, "playing cards" derived from Tarot cards, so this is quite practical. The meanings of each card, in a typical card deck are given, listing the correspondences, per each suit.

If you enjoy the section about playing cards as much as I did, you can purchase the following beautiful standard deck to begin using the techniques, per Doktor Snake....then, work your way up to the correspondences in the lovely book that comes with the card deck: "The Fortune Teller's Deck: Predict Your Future With Playing Cards," by Jane Lyle (ISBN # 0312136684). This deck has a particularly good feel and look for a Gypsy or Voodoo / Witchcraft practitioner--with an Antiqued style.

Keep in mind that "Doktor Snake's Voodoo Spellbook: Spells, Curses and Folk Magic for All Your Needs," by Doktor Snake, is a general overview of the subject and a personal account thereof....yet, it is a fascinating little book, packed with Spells, ideas, stories, inspiration and is well-worth the price.

I am very pleased with this book and it inspired me to research further. However, if you want in-depth research, I suggest "Voodou Visions." Don't pass-up Doktor Snake's book, though--it is worth owning just for the "playing card" Tarot correspondences!

i absolutely adore this book!!!

It is a bit non-traditional, and may even seem fantasy based.....

But it is very inspiring, and i will say from personal experience that some of the spell work in this book has
worked for "me"..........

It is simple to understand, enchanting, and keeps you on the edge of your seat..........

i read it straight thru =)

4.0 out of 5 stars Well... I liked It!, May 14, 2001

This review is from: Dr. Snake's Voodoo Spellbook (Hardcover)
And I am an old Mage, I do have a neat first edition and came across it last year sometime and I think it is an important piece of Voodoo culture.. Doctor Snake marvelously disguised this book so that children and young sojourners would be only able to pluck from this delightful Tome`simple basic Rituale`s and Ceremonie`s to protect them from getting in over their heads. However those that are better versed in the old Traditions will garner many more nuances from this synchretic Voodoo and realize that some of the so-called simple aspects of Ritualism are incredibly important to be able to gain the understanding of the many Mysteries and secret understandings within this seemingly entertaining book. This book has many basic foundations that are the building blocks for any Rituale` in the Cosmos, from here you can go anywhere. It is also important to have the right preparation, practice and developed PSI conscious of the mind to be able to harness the stronger powers of the Lwa. And I like the story... And I am avidly looking for Hoodoo-Conjuration-Witchcraft-Rootwork by Harry M Hyatt...

I bought this book after reading the reviews listed on here about Dr. Snakes book. I must say I am glad I spent the money. It was well worth it and I just love the stories. There are a few good spells for money luck. Thats what I was interested in myself. I love the section on playing cards also. I love the stories about selling your soul to the devil to play guitar. Super book! Very neat. I totally recommend. I am buying one for all my soul sisters for X-mas. Dr. Snake write another book!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Voodoo instruction with a storyline., October 15, 2000

Picking this book up out of plain curiosity was one of the best instinctive moves I have ever made. To go along with past experience, the more compact books hold a great deal of information. The Voodoo Spellbook is a prime example. In one easy to understand book Doktor Snake has included folk remedies, spells, potions,a complete list of materials with sources, and to top it off a great storyline with anecdotes. Of course I also made sure to get a copy with a lucky Mojo Doll. Facinating and fun but beware! Your views of reality may widen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Full of really good voodoo anecdotes..., April 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Dr. Snake's Voodoo Spellbook (Hardcover)
This is a really good book. I really enjoyed it. It's full of stories and anecdotes, and gives a lot of insight into magic and sorcery (wiccans, chaos magicians, and others would like it too). But it doesn't give that many spells, which is why I gave it four stars. But then I found Doktor Snake's "Voodoo Spells Weekly" ezine on the web...And that gives you a spell every week. So the book and the ezine sort of go together really well. I hope he brings out another book - It's like a voodoo carlos castaneda..

5.0 out of 5 stars A little gem of a book!, May 27, 2009

This review is from: Dr. Snake's Voodoo Spellbook (Hardcover)
I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoyed turning the colorful pages of Dr. Snake's book. From the first page I was truly under his spell. I'm not sure if he's pulling the reader's leg with his little whimsical tales, still it doesn't diminish a single bit of the pleasure. But I read each of the tales with a wink of skepticism in one eye and a twinkle of enchantment in the other.

My only true complaint is that the book is far too short. Surely a Two-Headed Doctor of his abundant talents could lead us farther down the dark corridors of voodoo. I also believe he wrote the book as more of a homage to his mentor and friend who makes his transition at the end of the book. I would be extremely grateful if the good doctor will grace us once more with his literary presence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Start, April 8, 2009
This review is from: Dr. Snake's Voodoo Spellbook (Hardcover)
It's good for someone who is curious and wants an introduction into Voodoo or just a generalization. I would still read other books on Voodoo. Some might consider it a bit childish cause of all the anecdotes and illustrations and such which are textbook-esque. I must admit that I have not tried the spells, but i did try telling the future with playing cards and it usually comes up right for me. All in all, I would recommend it to anybody who either wants to start going into Voodoo or just wants to dip a little bit into it.

This is more of a book on Hoodoo, rather than Voodoo -- but that is okay, it is packed full of useful spells and information. Truly one of my favorite books. It is also a pretty book too..... lots of great artwork and information. I particuarly like the information and stories shared within! THe information on baths and the Hoodoo altar is nice!

Much Love & Many Blessings,

However, I did find it to be entertaining and perhaps some of the things in it may actually work... who knows. I find trouble reading a book when someone is talking about individuals who are hundreds of years old but all of these occult books are a little out there for me. If you have some money to spend, go ahead and pick this book up, it's worth the money, never know when you might want to sell your soul to the devil to learn to play an instrument (yes, that is in there).
